  1. Why do I feel sorry for him?

He comes across as a reasonably decent bloke and has proven to be a decent football coach. Regardless of how you rate him as manager and any knee-jerk reaction to the defeat at the weekend, the interview came across as someone who was doing his utmost to remain professional despite clearly being upset at having his team dismantled during the window without any suitable replacements being brought in. All of which was outside of his control.

I wonder what it is that keeps him in his job - I think I would have walked by now.

  2. Do you think if gate reciepts dropped dramatically he'd go for less just to get out ?

Who knows? Realistically, you're going to need a replacement billionaire to buy him out - in which case I'd imagine he wouldn't want to make a loss on what he paid.

  3. Remember an article by Shearer last year saying £150 million should be enough to buy the club does that seem right ?

Realistically, Ashley would probably happily sell for £100m but would leave his loans on the balance sheet, meaning any new owners would need to pay £5-6m per year in interest to Ashley.

To buy the club outright and clear the loans, he'd likely want to recoup what he paid, meaning £200m+. That's never going to happen in the current football climate.

  4. (going from memory)

£134m to Shepherd and Hall to buy the shares.

He then paid off £100m of debt relating to a mortgage on the stadium with Barclays and the overdraft (saving around £6.5m interest each year).

When we were relegated, he increased the loan by £40m to £140m and has been gradually taking repayments to reduce it back down towards the initial spend. The accounts aren't out yet so we don't know what the current loan balance stands at, but I'd imagine it's still over £100m.

Effectively, he's massively out of pocket as things stand.

  5. From memory, the last set of accounts included a note to say that he planned to pay himself back £18m this season, but I think that plan may have been abandoned.

Regardless, the accounts should be out soon enough, then we can see how much his loans are valued at.

  6.

Regarding the owing them money if you leave thing. You should have a look at that. I know that was the case when I was going through the chartered accountancy shite but the ICAEW advised their members that such an employment clause would not be enforcible in court. Restraint of employment or sumfink.

It obviously depends on whether you like your employer or feel that you owe them some loyalty but if you want to move on then you shouldn't let that hold you back.

I moved firms during my training contract (I'd done the last exam but not received the results yet). Got hit with a £2k charge that my next firm covered. That itself was repayable in various degrees to the new firm if I left within 2 years.

Now I pay out £330 for bollocks all. I get access to £160 courses on how to create a pivot table and that pretty much sums it up.

  7. We were without our best 2 players in Colo, Remy and Cabaye's loss was key too but that was shite from Pardew. Williamson was distributing the long balls in the first half and for that fact alone, we deserved to lose 0-3.

Especially considering the weather. It was mindless to even consider long balls with the wind.
