it would be better if he could do it by democratic means and not by holding mass rallies, breaking contracts etc etc

More Mussolini than Lee Kwan Yew I'm afraid

:baby:

Sorry, but that's bollocks Rob, 7 elections/referendums since 1998 proves that, as you will be aware, the UK has had 3 since 1997.

An ongoing political crisis in Venezuela culminated in August 2004, when Venezuelans went to the polls to decide whether to keep or dismiss President Hugo Chavez, who subsequently won 59 percent of the vote and whose term ends in December 2006.

For two years before the vote, the Organization of American States and The Carter Center worked with the government and the opposition to help resolve issues between them, including terms for a presidential recall referendum. Since June 2002, the

Center supported the efforts of the OAS secretary general to facilitate dialogue and worked at the highest political levels as well as intermediate social levels toward reconciliation and peaceful resolution of conflicts in Venezuela. After a May 2003 agreement between the government and opposition pledging to work toward a peaceful resolution, the Center, together with the OAS, observed all the steps leading to the referendum, including the collection of signatures to petition for a referendum, the verification of signatures, and the referendum vote itself.

On Feb. 25, 2005, The Carter Center released its final comprehensive report of its observation mission for the presidential recall referendum in Venezuela since November 2003 and a separate report on its efforts to provide facilitation, mediation, and reconciliation in Venezuela since June 2002. The observation mission report includes additional studies conducted by the Center in light of allegations of electronic vote fraud and the findings of an independent panel of statisticians and computer security experts who reviewed the allegations but found no evidence of such fraud, confirming the Center's conclusions.

Wor lass was pointing out the similarity in the ending of "The Last King of Scotland" with "Year of Living Dangerously"

In both a cocky white bloke gets way out of his depth in Third World politics, gets beaten to a pulp and just escapes on a plane atthe end and a worthy local - the doctor in LKoS and his PKI ofice assistant in YoLD - are left to be killed by the local govt.

and neither white guy is a hero - they're actually rather unpleasant little shits

Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Bill kerr and Linda Hunt - who got Best Supporting Actress in 1983 for playing Billy Kwan

It was quite realistic - I knew a guy who'd lived thru that period in jakarta and he reckoned it was bang on

a couple of years ago it was on BBC2 one night and Channel 4 the next - and the Times gave it completely different writeups for each one - th effirst was "marvellous atmospheric film etc etc" and the next one was "overblown Mel Gibson......"

:rolleyes::blink::blink::blink::blink:

The name is from the book - the film stays very very close to it - but it was shot in Manilla and so is nowhere near crowded enough in the street scenes. If you were ever going to java I'd say it would be a very useful introduction...............

yesterday he announced he was nationalising a teleom company "but we will not pay the international price - we wil nationalise it first and then discuss the price we will pay"

not surprisingly the Stock Exchange is in free fall and any Venzualan business has stopped investing

it all sounds great yelled from a platform but in the real world these decisions bite you in the bum eventually

Worked out pretty well for the UK, they can flog them off for billions a few years down the line.
