I don't think I can stretch my budget really

Then go old skool Tom and buy her a film camera!

Then test her skills and buy her a rangefinder.

Great value.

Or a compact zoom. The Lumix TZ5 is a smashing little camera.

Dr have you seen the Lumix DMC LX3-K? It looks a great wide angle digital rangefinder.

Tom while looking for the Lumix above I found this, Lumix SLR which the article states is about $400US, so if you can find one it should be in your budget.

I'd still go old skool but hey, I'm sad

Not a SLR but Leica were doing really cheap deal on their V-Lux which including a £100 cashback offer meant you could get it for just over £300. I got one but I'm not sure if the offer is still on.

Yes, I've looked at an LX3 before, gives you a lot of opportunity to fiddle and be creative in comparison to most compacts, but again its pushing that £300 budget.

True, I was looking at one in Frankfurt a couple of weeks ago and it was 700 euro!!!

I can buy one here for $825 which on current exchange is about 400 euro.

You know for just 100 quid you can buy a Bessa L on ebay with the world's best value 15mm lense, the 2nd widest - least distorted mass produced lense in the world, which leaves you with over 200 quid to spend on stock and developing. And you can take pics like this with it:

That second one you've highlighted Sammy isn't an slr. I've used its predecessor, the FZ18, and again its a really good camera. And in budget.

Oh, sorry.

What do you expect from someone who uses film rangefinders???
