Scottish Mag 3 Posted March 5, 2006 Share Posted March 5, 2006 Portugal and on-loan Newcastle midfielder Hugo Viana has virtually guaranteed his place at this summer's World Cup Finals, with Portugal team-mate Deco backing him to travel to Germany. The 23-year-old Portuguese midfielder was hugely impressive in his country's 3-0 friendly win against fellow World Cup finalists Saudi Arabia in midweek. Barcelona playmaker Deco called on Luiz Felipe Scolari for him to be included in his squad for the finals in Germany. “Hugo has great qualities and belongs in the squad,” said Deco, himself an integral part of the Portugal squad, and the focus of Scolari's bid to win the World Cup. Viana, who was unhappy on Tyneside, is currently on loan from Newcastle United at Valencia for the season, and is hoping to clinch a permanent move to the Spanish side. Ally 0 Posted March 7, 2006 Share Posted March 7, 2006 I thought Viana looked pretty good in his first season when he got plenty of starts. Second season he was awful and Robson obviously fell out of favour with him, so that when he did come in at the end of the season he was unmotivated and unfit.
