L'OM to step up Boum interest

Recommended Posts

Marseille are set to step up their interest in Jean-Alain Boumsong.

New L'OM coach Albert Emon is a long-time admirer of the French international and is looking to fill a gap in his defensive ranks after agreeing to sell veteran Frederic Dehu.

Emon is a long-time member of Marseille's coaching staff and was a driving force behind the club's bid to sign Boumsong from Auxerre three years ago.

United are keen to sell Boumsong, who fell out of first-team favour late last season after one too many high-profile errors, to raise transfer funds.

The 26-year-old would prefer a return to France, with Lens and Paris St Germain reported to also be interested in him, but Newcastle's asking price could prove a stumbling block.

United are looking to recoup at least £3 million of the £8 million they invested in Boumsong just 18 months ago.

But the strength of Emon's interest, along with United's excellent working relationship with Marseille general manager Pape Diouf, could see a deal pushed through.

I think we could get £4-5m back, French clubs have a lot more cash than they used to with their new TV deal. If PSG and Marseille both want them then it increases the chances of a bidding war given how much the clubs love each other.
