  1. On the face of it that's a fair point, but we've got a coach in the same league as Sir Bob now who actually has the ability motivate and to actually improve players as the season goes on. The vast majority of our squad won't have played for someone with Bentez's ability before, a lot of his ex players say he's the best they've worked with. Of course we're all allowed an opinion on who's coming in, but trying to play FM in our own heads doesn't allow for what might happen with the players during the season and how they might develop.

Look absolutely, I think he will play better under Benitez and you can't deny his managerial talent, but I certainly feel there's more value for money out there than £5m for Ciaran Clark....

  2. I hate offering excuses for twats like that. You're in the wrong game if your own competitive spirit doesn't motivate you. And definitely not captain material

Only offering a possible reason as to why he looked more motivated latter end of last season in comparison to previous seasons.

Like I said, I'm not defending it and anyone with that attitude and mindset should not be at the club.

  3. He is but only when he's motivated. I think a lot of the last 2 or 3 seasons he hasn't been. Looked like he'd got some of his motivation back towards the end of the season mind. I do kind of feel that it's past time to move him on now though.

I agree with you to an extent, the last two seasons his manager has been Pardew and McClaren, I could see why he might have a movitation problem under those two clowns - not that I am defending that mindset/attitude....

No surprise he looked better towards the end of last season, he was working under a more intelligent manager and not a daft head coach.

  4. I must admit I've paid virtually no attention to football close season, but I'm a bit disappointed that we haven't had any really exciting signings. (Unless I've missed them).

I'm actually more worried about still having Sissoko, Anita, De Jong, Gouffran, Riviere and Sammy in the first team... and even then I'd prefer if we got rid of Janmaat and Tiote long term...

  5. £25 million for Wijnaldum; practically pays for Gayle, Ritchie and Hanley already.

I'm liking the look of our team already (even if I do think we have perhaps overspent ourselves - but that's just the nature of the English transfer market nowadays).

  6. The consensus from what I've heard is that he (and the rest of the defenders) have been poor for Scotland

I think he's a high end championship player, who will do well for us. Good addition to the squad

I would agree to an extent... not sure he merits £5.5m however...

As we're in the Championship that's ok then.

Perhaps so but £5.5m on a player who will get found out in the Premiership?

  7.

Blackburn fans seem to like him...

And what have Blackburn amounted to since relegation? :icon_lol:

I've seen him plenty of times for Scotland to see he's nothing better than a Championship defender.

  8. If any player owes us absolutely nothing, it's Townsend. I can't see why he would get any hate. He signed with a get-out clause. From the outset, the intention was to help keep us up or go. What's the problem?

There are people to blame for Townsend leaving (heaps of them), but Townsend isn't one of them. Townsend was honest in his intentions all along.

All in all, I'm with Howay. He wasn't here long enough for me to be arsed that he's leaving. He's a good player, but I don't think he's spectacular in any sense. When we go back up, we could sign one of any number of players that would be just as good (or better) than him.

Nothing against him, he did well for us, but it's not like we've lost a future England great. We haven't even lost a current England regular (not that that particular designation means anything these days).

Anyway, good luck to him. He did well for us. If his teammates did the same, he'd still be here.

Absolutely agree, stunned that a few folk on here have criticised him for leaving; we would have been relegated long before we did if we didn't have him in the team.
