  1. Just started Westworld, on episode 2. Not feeling it at all, anyone got any reasons to keep going?

What else is good drama? I can't be bothered to trawl though the thread but am looking for the less well known recommendations. Obviously heard and probably seen all the big new shows but I got the sense there were some nuggets knocking about which i hadn't seen. If you wouldn't mind

  2. It was your straw man not mine ffs  You then even got distracted by my reasons for being concerned with Trump. And you have the nerve to blame me for wasting time.

He did not have majorities across both houses. He had the house with him for 2 of 6 years. Only Reagan, Clinton, Nixon and Eisenhower have had similar. Trump will also be kept in line through the checks and balances but lets face it, something needs to be done about ISIS and something needs to be done to increase security. I dont expect Clinton to back away from that but i trust her judgement better than spanner face's.

  3. All true but Obama was a democrat being dragged to the right by the Republicans who are funded by the neoconservative nutters like the Foch brothers. The influences of the CIA, the military and the corporations that support them act as an anchor to the Democrats from moving too far to the left.

A Republican president doesnt have the same forces anchoring him from moving right. I think that sums it up for me.

  4. I would never have thought to ask if you supported Trump.  I assumed no-one on here would actually prefer him to Clinton. I asked if a victory for Trump would concern you "given the limits on presidential power that have so stifled Obama".  Because you seemed to be agreeing with Parky that Obama's hands were tied on most important issues anyway.

I couldn't give a shit what Randy the Racist thinks of that question.

So are you as unconcerned about a Trump victory as Parky, Chez, given the limits on presidential power that have so stifled Obama?

Is the question you asked and the one i answered. I ignored the caveat as i dont think the caveat is relevant to the first part of the question. The logical implication of your argument is that no president is important as power is stifled which lacks any form of nuanced thinking i thought it was best to move on. Do we really have to waste time doing this?

  5. Because you asked me a direct question about whether i supported Trump. I was addressing all of the questions as i assume you are able to hold them in your head rather than needing formatted signposts.

I don't support Trump was an answer to that question and i was explaining that despite having a great insight into how the rational, educated Trump supporters think, despite a Trump win being better for me personally and despite all the email scandals, i'd still vote for Clinton.

  6. I always find meeting and talking to supporters much more insightful than reading about them on the internet.

This is a very politician's way of saying you're working for his campaign. Has he grabbed you by the pussy yet?

    Indirectly i am. And yes.

  7. The Dafiq magazine is produced by ISIS. The magazine is a representation of the espoused goals and ambition and beliefs of ISIS members. The magazine is produced for members of ISIS by ISIS members. It's a first hand account from ISIS, but because it goes against the West-hating narrative: it must be denied. You look like a fool. You looked like a fool last time we spoke, and you look like a fool now. Unbelievable. Just so everyone is clear: you are attempting to deny that ISIS understands its own motivations.

As for the 'we created ISIS' crap. Basically, no. The Middle East has been a violent shithole for 2,000 years. The Islamic violence has migrated to Europe because the violent Islamic people have migrated to Europe.

Unless of course that's exactly what ISIS want you to think.

  8. i can't remember anyone but stevie saying he shouldn't be banned like - what a tedious bore he was in the end.

I got absolute pelters for saying he shouldn't be banned. HF and me were standing up for freedom of expression and the right not to be a massive bairn. Was not a popular position.

  9. So are you as unconcerned about a Trump victory as Parky, Chez, given the limits on presidential power that have so stifled Obama?

I understand that controlling both houses vests greater power obviously, and there are different permutations that come into play, but the examples provided by Parky include those when Democrats controlled both houses and were still stifled.

Personally I think that Trump would be vested with great power, as I believe Obama was. The fact that presidential power is being diminished by more partisan politics won't mitigate that, and only did for Obama to a marginally greater extent that it did his predecessors.

I know and work with people who are involved in the Trump campaign, i will be in the US for the election with some of these people and hear their arguments all the time. I dont think Trump would be complete disaster but i support Clinton as i find nothing in the whole email story that bothers me at all. That is a very objective point of view, if i was being selfish i would support Trump.

Re: Obama I think you raise very decent and important points. Think we disagree on the how extended Obama's powers have been and for me you ignore his political strategy which, as the first black man to run the country, i think he had no choice but to pursue. My Republican friends even now call him out as the reason for the racial divisions in the country, even going as far to blame him for the racial disturbances after high profile deaths, citing persuasive statistics that black men arent more likely to be killed by Policemen. Hi bi-partisan strategy has led to a strong foreign policy and an inability to close Guantanamo in line with his promise. This has mitigated against those political divisions.

  10. They are mainly used for walking for most of the year, it's not just ski resorts and treacherous mountains. Done some nice hikes around Interlaken and the lakes around Zug are amazing and have very similar geological features to our own. Not really comparing the two as the colors and atmosphere are very different but Alpine walking is a very big thing in those parts.

  11. I think the French government forcing Muslim women to remove their headdress is an interesting one. There's arguments on both sides that I feel are reasonable.

Same here, not sold on the idea of banning clothes in a free society. The Burkini thing this summer was an absolute joke.

  12. It's somewhat true, to a small degree.

    https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/statistics

Obama has certainly enacted fewer laws than in previous administrations, but that follows a downward trend that goes back to the 70s.

Less than half the number of laws enacted in the 1977 Congress (804) were enacted in the  first Bush Congrress of 2001 (383) for example.  Obama's first 2 years saw more laws enacted than Bush's too (385).

More legislation failed in the 97/98, 99/00, 05/06 and 07/09 congress than in three quarters of those under Obama.

Pure numbers bore people though, if there were a multitude of examples of high profile changes that Obama was prevented from implementing they could be reeled off.  There's not though.

If anything the presidents are the ones with all the power.  They get to veto bills that could become law.  Bill Clinton used that power more than any other president (36 times).  Obama has used it as many times as Bush (12) before his presidency ends.

Meaningless without an understanding of the House majorities.

  13. I know Obama likes to quote that number, but it means nothing on it's own.

How many bills are blocked in a normal presidency?

That depends on the structure of Congress. Have a look at the following

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Presidents_and_control_of_Congress

Then try and understand the difference between Senate and House. Then work out how much control Obama had.

Some but spent 6 years with inability to implement Bills with majority in the House. Problematic.
