  1. Agree that Shola gets a bit of a hard time, or at least more than is warranted considering how we've had much worse players during his time here, the problem is that he's been here so long now it's gotten a bit like the Heskey situation did with England. It's not their fault they get picked/contracts renewed etc The fact is everyone's just fed up with Shola. Ranger could play far worse and people would still not criticize the lad as he has the potential to get better whereas with Shola he's only going to go further downhill over the next few years.
  2. I pretty much agree with that, never saw what all the fuss was about, scored fuck all and disrupted the continuity, Obviously he'll be remembered for the Barca game in which he was fantastic but apart from that I didn't see much from him. Total myth that he cost us the league if that's what you're getting at. Didn't do it very often in the league (although West Ham and Man Utd at home were two notable exceptions in his first season / title run-in). Was class in Europe where he had more time on the ball. He would probably thrive now with the extra protection players get. Aye I was probably taken in a bit by that theory at the time, (was in my early teens then), it's not as though the extra firepower wasn't welcome I just thought Asprilla almost always flattered to deceive. Can barely ever remember him actually scoring apart from in european games.
  3. Can't see it happening like. They shouldn't have them these days anyway (not players who earned what he's earned). The whole idea of them were for loyal pros to earn some tax free money to put away / invest in a business so they can make a living after their playing career is finished. Now they earn enough in a few months to buy a mansion. well the proceeds almost always go to charities now anyway so in theory theyre still a nice way to commemorate a players achievements but yeah, a Shola testimonial could be a bit embarrassing.
  4. Mickey Quinn Mind you, in almost all of these cases we all knew full well they were fat before they signed!
  5. why bother reading and constantly replying to his threads if he annoys you so much
  6. Agree on Clark to some extent actually, what I remember of Sellers was good though.
  7. And as regards the topic, I would by no means say that Habib Beye was shite, but everyone seemed to jizz all over his performances for us when I just saw him as another middle of the road full back.

  9. Niko Papavasilou, the Pink told me he was shit hot. He wasn't. This was my nickname for a while in school due to me supporting newcastle and the fact I apparently looked a bit cypriot, not that anyone apart from me knew who he was but I think I had a sticker of him on a book or something. Only remember him playing once or twice for us.
  10. well I've seen you posting from time to time and you seem like one of the more sensible/good humoured etc, but I obviously wasn't here when you were a regular poster and hence missed the in joke, I feel all left out and Kevin-like And I should point out that by saying the bit in bold I did NOT mean that I feel like I've been helicoptered by my Dad's cock or some similar hilarity PS cheers for clearing that up Gemmill

  12. Duff because for 5 million I thought we had a real bargain, same with Geremi even though I didn't particularly rate him to begin with. Had a feeling the likes of Luque/Bassedas/Marcelino etc would have trouble here due to their previous leagues being so different. Have to say I thought Boumsong would be better than he was mind you, and I was also quite confident about Rozenthal initially, was quite surprised when he turned out to be a bit shite.
  13. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100908/ap_en_...it_glenn_shadix Not that many will know who he is but he played Otho in Beetlejuice and voiced the major in Nightmare before Xmas which I have a nostalgic addiction to, anyway RIP
  14. I don't think we ever played better football under KK than the season when Sellars played wide-left before Ginola arrived. He was a quality footballer and combined really well with Beresford. Beresford was a tad underestimated himself, was very good in his first few seasons anyhow, went downhill fairly quickly IIRC though.
  15. don't think anyone could forget that goal, the sheer audacity of it. I loved Albert at the time, I have no idea in hindsight if he was any use as a defender but he was certainly an exciting one!
  16. It really is a shame what's happened to him football-wise regardless of what anyone thinks of him as a person
  17. Steve Watson was probably a tad underestimated in his time here, very versatile
  18. soooo....we're 3-1 up on Andorra (and should be far more) and the Scots are losing at home to Liectenstein
  19. He's our most capped player of all time Given should over take him one day though. and there he goes and gets a goal for us, typical There was one season for Everton where he was good tho.. When they had Marcus Bent up front, that bald midfielder in the middler(what's his name) and they were playing a 4-5-1. It was the best i saw Everton. Less reliant on free kicks. Had a good system on the wings... Still don't know how he's most capped. The Cascarino head on em! Gravesen, or even our own (sort of) Lee Carsley for that matter, but yeah Kilbane was decent earlier on in his career, was actually very impressive when he was at West Brom as a youngster, but the last 5 years hes been utter gash

  21. aye, although most thought he was a good player despite his obvious cuntity I don't think many realised we wouldnt have another striker as dangerous as him for god knows how long.
  22. He's our most capped player of all time
  23. In terms of raw ability without a doubt. Think in part I always struggle to accept blistering pace as being the same thing as footballing ability. Although it's obviously as important as anything else (if not more so) in the modern game. Do you think that was him? Blistering pace and that's it? Not at all mate. It was still in reference to your initial point about top 10 abilitywise over the last 30 years. I think there were more gifted players during that period but that's not to say I didnt think Dyer was technically very skilfull. Fwiw I also take your point about him operating at pace too, which ups the skill levels required. As has been said, he was also ideal in that particular Robson team, which makes a huge difference (in terms of matching players to systems). I don't honestly class him as underrated though (your defence being proof of that), more a case of highly disliked for other transgressions. I'll name who I think who had more technique than Dyer: Keegan Beardsley Waddle Gascoigne Ginola Robert Shearer - his technique in striking a ball was arguably the best in the world Solano ...and in terms of pure technique you really are struggling to name anyone with more technique than Dyer. Agreed and on his day you could arguably put him ahead of Robert and even Solano
  24. Coleman looks class so far alright, we should really throw him in imo, get rid of Kilbane and swtich O'Shea to left back. McShane is poor, but for me the real shocker is Kilbane and his 105 caps, sweet holy jesus what has he done to get even half of those...More dumbfounding than Heskey for England.
