That would be a very lame excuse. 26037 It's true though. Tbh, you wouldn't compare the Liverpool sides in the 70's and 80's to Chelsea now... or would you? This knowing the defence of the opponents was much worse, with no foreigners playing. 26147 And what? Other teams have improved, so has Newcastle. And we are talking about a period of four years, not several decades. Signing the likes of Luque and Michael Owen and then say that teams like Bolton have become better is utter nonsense in my opinion. The ambition has to be challenging for a CL place . And that's what even Souness himself said yesterday. By this standard has he to be judged now, starting at the game against Fulham. 26154 Hey I wasn't really saying that to argue against your point (sorry, it did look like it), just saying now the top teams will always be improving as they buy new players, and won't be compared to teams of years ago. But yeah this is only a period of 4 years so I stand mistaken. However it's not just the quality of the players that make the difference, it's greatly down to the morale and skills of the management among other things, which could eb partly why Liverpool finsihed below Everton. If the players are not giving 100% or near that (Butt, Robert etc.) or having fights on the pitch it's no surprise the team's results won't be as good. Now with a some world-class players, the most likely excuse for bad results is the manager, and with just a couple of bad results, he'll be looking for work. 26173 I think that's what Isegrim was saying - Souness now has no excuses. How many other managers have been backed to the tune of 45 million in less than a year? This is the difference between us and teams like Bolton - or even Liverpool for that matter. I am over the moon with these signings, though I can't help think it is wasted on Souness. Our next investment must be a good manager - look at the players we have to tempt him with! But its a win win situation really. If we start picking up results (and by this I mean become at least a top 5 team), then that's great. But if we don't, Souness will get sacked and someone else will get us up there, I am confident of that. 26243 couldnt put that better myself. He's an average manager im afraid, i didnt want him here and i still think he's not the man for the job and never will be.

yeah, most forums have a gold section, its great to save classic threads. I think toonchat used to have one before, but i might be wrong. 26199 And this would be in it. http://www.toontastic.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=236&hl= 26208 yeah there have been one or two very funny threads that could go in.

I would not rule that out. Real sign £18.5m defender Ramos 26192 Was going to say that, it wouldnt surprise me.

Anyone fancy Ginola?

We could do with one to put threads like the dramatic Micheal Owen signing and Nobby returning threads in. Would be a shame to lose them.

I was so upset when he left and it made it worse knowing he didnt really want to leave This is just a dream come true, one of my favourite ever players returning

I agree, not quite the bad influence and "cancer at the club" that some people claimed he is 26077 I'm beginning to believe that Souness was brought in deliberately to hold the reins while Shearer prepared to take over. He's been heavily involved in 2 massive transfers this summer and it's all experience. Perhaps his 'staying on' was more a case that things weren't ready fo him to take over? 26105 I'd be amazed if shearer wasnt the next gaffer, but am i alone in wishing this doesnt happen so soon? I want it to work so much, want us to win something with shearer as our manager that im dreading it all going tits up because its too soon for Shearer. Id rather he went to a lower league club for a couple of seasons first. Purely to gain some experience. Yes, the media would focus on him anyway because of who he is, but imagine him being under the spotlight at the Toon, the pressure would be immense. I just cannot bear to think of it not working out and BigAl, our legend having to leave under a cloud 26123 Can't see Shearer going to a lower league club. He will want this job and, some day, he will get it. 26127 Yes i know he is destined for it and is being groomed for it.......but its such a MASSIVE job to step right into.
