  1. Centre back was a must imo. Not looking forward to seeing Williamson back once Taylor gets injured again.

We'll really need Colo for this one, hope he makes it. We'll need a magic moment or two again from someone to take anything from this. Jonas will have a vital role again in keeping Mata/Hazard in check. For all the complaints about Jonas the man is absolutely vital, at least in games like these. One of those players that dont look like setting the world on fire when they are playing yet you miss them dearly when they are not.

Williamson isn't that bad although we need to upgrade on both, I seem to remember reading we had conceded less on average with Williamson playing rather than Taylor going into the last 4 games of the season. Not sure how accurate that stat is as I haven't bothered looking myself.

  2. Not losing anyone is alright but finishing 5th and not building on such a season at all in terms of getting bodies in is an opportunity missed.

We are not a 13th placed side anymore and shouldnt be content with "losing noone". Wigan we are not :)

Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in the country and they've lost their better players for a few years now, Spurs also look like losing VDV and Modric.

The fact is we've got some quality players that could get into a better team than ours so keeping them is a positive, especially as people have predicted mass sales for the last few windows.

  3. We've played some good stuff without creating much, nice to see we are trying to keep it down and play short passes and Anita and Bigi have both kept it well, the problem is further up field where Marveaux is hogging the touchline too much when he should be further in field, Gosling isn't providing the link between Cisse and the midfield and Obertan has been bad.

Tavernier has been unlucky rather than poor as I don't think he's done much wrong, the balls dropping in behind him have just been that good that he can't do much about them and his positioning and pace to recover have both been good.

  4. Lush this like.

Totally disagree with CT on leaving young lads on the sidelines to learn. If watching made you a better player I'd be as good as Peter Crouich by now.

Lads like Chopra who showed the same kind of promise early on but got no first team experience at the highest level, instead going to Watford and Barnsley, don't learn what it takes to step up to the next level and fizzle out as average lower league players. Lads like Krul and Carroll who get early exposure end up as club record sales or first team solids.

I agree completely with this, if you want young lads to improve then they need games rather than wasting their career here until being moved on at 22 with a handful of games played.

  5. Going by people who know the Fenway group, they wade in with alot of cash - and if it doesnt work out it dries up. Thanks Kenny, pretty obvious Brendan needs to sell to buy, and he has completely alienated Carroll.

what I would give for us to sign him and him to do a Toure/fellaini on Liverpool when we meet them.

One of the articles I was reading past night said Liverpool now need to sell if they want to buy anyone else this window, if they sell us Carroll for £12 million they can afford to buy Dempsey then.

  6. I think its equally possible that Ashley is feigning interest in signing Carroll as it it we are actually interested.

Could be a good way of keeping Liverpool from strengthening, get him only interested in us, play it down to the wire and then pull out when they dont have time to do anything about it. Means they keep him, he gets cheaper and they dont get to replace him with someone better suited to Rodgers' style. If you think Liverpool are probably at or around our level, it would not surprise me if we engaged in those sort of competitive tactics.

I was reading an article last night where Liverpool have apparently told him to get his future sorted this week or spend the season on the bench as they won't let him join us on the final day, he's turned down West Ham, Fulham and Villa apparently.

Looks like they think we could he dragging it out too.

  7. Shaky first half which is natural as Spurs came to exploit us with bale and Lennon but we did really well second half in the main.

Jonas and Ben Arfa were outstanding for us.

All in all it was a great result and a great start to the season.

    My evaluation is thus.

Krul: Didn't look as commanding as we know he can be and looked a bit shaky for some reason. 6

Taylor: Looked commanding and did his job well in the main and was a constant voice marshalling the defence. 7

Perch: Overall I though he did a very good job at centre back and seems to get more confident in every game he plays and is assured on the ball, plus put some good tackles in. 7

Simpson: Walking a tightrope early on and was having a lot of trouble with Bales pace. His forward play isn't the best but he stuck to his guns defensively but I did worry about a second yellow. 6

Santon: Defensively he also stuck to his task and also got forward well and looks assured on the ball for most part. He will get better and better without a doubt.7

Cabaye: Wasn't at his influential best but still got stuck in. 6

Tiote: His break up play and his never say die attitude is always there, he did try to do a bit too much at times and also lacked concentration in the pass but overall, he battled which is what we needed and was desperate to stay on the pitch. 6

Ben Arfa: In this mood he is going to cause any team serious problems. He was clever on the ball, always willing to take players on and also offering himself in positions all over, plus his defensive work was great.... Great penalty both getting it and taking it. 9

Jonas: This lad has some engine on him and his defensive work as well as his willingness to run at and take players on is brilliant and as we can see, he's never afraid to forage ahead and take a shot either. 9

Ba: Excellent goal and always willing to chase down balls as well as dragging players away allowing others to get into space. It will have done his confidence the world of good. 8

Cisse: For once, the limelight was taken from him. Always looking to get into positions but not getting too much job. Looked a bit subdued to be honest but will destroy a team very soon I think. 6

Anita: Showed a few glimpses of what he's all about and once up to speed with the team I think we have a great player on our hands. He's also no slouch either. 6

Obertan: For some reason he looked terrified. He had a few opportunities to run with the ball but gave it to a team mate like it was a hot potato. He needs to get his confidence together and show what he has because we have a big season ahead with potentially a lot of games. 5

To be fair to Obertan he came on to see the game out and did just that, when he did have the chance to run at them he preferred to slow the game down and make sure we retained possession.

  8. I was thinking about the striker situation last night and while I presumed that they would want to replace Best I remembered back to January when the club were prepared to let him go to Celtic on loan for the rest of the season, so perhaps Pardew thinks he's already covered there?

Not that he wouldn't take Carroll if the deal was right of course but I do think it could he Carroll or no one up top this summer, with a move for him in January a possibility too.
