  3. NEWCASTLE are ready to make a £4million offer for PSV Eindhoven ace Jefferson Far fan. And the Peruvian striker took yesterday's friendly to show precisely why. The Magpies want the 21-year-old to follow Damien Duff into St James's Park as Glenn Roeder continues to reconstruct his squad. They would be advised to try and do it quickly. Farfan spent last season firing in 21 goals as PSV picked up the Dutch title. He also bagged a brace in the Champions League against AC Milan - and it took him just 16 minutes to set his team on the road to a comfortable victory. His first shot from a clever Phillip Cocu cross was superbly pushed against a post by Shay Given. But the rebound fell to Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, and his short cross was drilled in by Farfan despite the efforts of Steven Taylor. That lead was doubled 25 minutes later. Farfan produced a fine ball down the PSV right to send Michael Lamey galloping away and his cross was cracked past Given first time by Hesselink. Four minutes after the break, and with Newcastle still to cause any problems for the visitors, a third goal arrived. Arouna Kone's driving run left Craig Moore for dead and his cross, pulled back from the byline, was emphatically finished by Jason Culina. That overshadowed the home debut of Duff. The Ireland winger will hope to enjoy more fruitful afternoons when the Premiership season kicks off next month. A 48th-minute far-post volley was as close as Duff got to opening his account when he was picked out by a fine cross-field pass from Nobby Solano. Then he went for glory from 25 yards but his effort soared over the PSV bar. Duff lasted an hour and was given a standing ovation. It wasn't the reception that greeted the return of Nicky Butt as the former Manchester United midfielder was jeered on his return from a season-long loan spell at Birmingham. Newcastle eventually dragged themselves back into the contest in the 67th minute when substitute James Milner crossed to the far post and Shola Ameobi rose powerfully to head home. Five minutes later, Ameobi was brought down in the area by Eric Addo and Albert Luque, Duff's replacement, stroked home the penalty.
  4. Newcastle have held talks with Sol Campbell after representatives of the England international indicated their client would welcome a move to St James' Park. On the evidence of their defensive frailties, his services are required with some urgency. Discussions with the former Arsenal centre-back are at a preliminary stage, and much rests on Newcastle's ability to offload Jean-Alain Boumsong, the out-of-favour defender, in the process freeing up funds to cover Campbell's £45,000-a-week remuneration. Monaco are keen to take the French international on loan, but Newcastle have so far baulked at the condition that would require them to cover half of the player's £35,000-a-week wages. Newcastle hope to progress on three cup fronts this season, and a player of Campbell's experience, who is available on a free transfer, would be a useful addition to the squad. Portsmouth are also interested in the defender, who is keen to show he can still cut it at the top level after briefly going AWOL in the wake of some unconvincing displays last season for Arsenal. He fits the blueprint for the type of experienced Premiership player with a point to prove to a former employer that Glenn Roeder, the Newcastle manager, is keen to attract. The chairman, Freddy Shepherd, acknowledged the need to bring in further additions on the back of Damien Duff's arrival from Chelsea. "We're working towards more signings," he said. "Patience is important in getting the right player or players because the transfer deadline is the last day of August, which is over a month away." Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, certainly a big name, and one of the few that Newcastle have not been linked with this summer, further took the edge off Duff's Newcastle debut by doubling the visitors' lead on 39 minutes with a neat close-range finish from a Michael Lamey cross. Jefferson Farfan, a player Roeder admires, who followed up from 10 yards after Shay Given had pushed his shot on to a post, had already, on 15 minutes, exposed the limitations of Newcastle's centre-back pairing of Titus Bramble and Steven Taylor. Despite the odd flash of inspiration from Duff, who was substituted on the hour, Newcastle were only marginally more convincing in attack. "Damien's been back training for less than two weeks but was desperate to play, so to get 60 minutes from him is pleasing," Roeder said. The substitute Jason Culina produced a confident finish from inside the box for the third goal four minutes after the restart as Newcastle were again left in disarray by the impressive play of Arouna Kone. Shola Ameobi sparked a late revival to give the scoreline a flattering look with a close-range header from James Milner's 67th-minute cross, before winning a penalty five minutes later following Eric Addo's foul, which was confidently converted by Albert Luque. "We got a chasing in the first half," Roeder said. "We had four or five players not on their game and could have been on the end of a five-goal beating when the third went in."

  6. More pace and penetration on the right wing? edit through Milner 166847[/snapback] First came from a Milner cross, the penalty came from a long ball.
  7. 60m Newcastle made a triple change on the hour mark, with Milner, Luque and Butt coming on in place of Solano, Duff and Emre. 46m Craig Moore came off the bench for Taylor
  8. 68m NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-3)Luque saw half-hearted appeals for a penalty waved away when he tumbled under a challenge from Simons, but moments later United took the lead when Milner's cross from the right was headed home by Shola Ameobi to reduce the deficit.

  11. 41m PSV EINDHOVEN GOAL (0-2) Four minutes before the interval Michael lamey was allowed time and space to get in a cross from the right, and Jan Venegoor of Hesselink ghosted in to fire past Given and give the visitors a two-goal cushion.

  14. 16m PSV EINDHOVEN GOAL (0-1) Given pulled off a great save to get down low to keep out a shot from Varynen, but Venegoor of Hesselink's low cross was diverted by Taylor into the path of Jefferson Farfan and he drilled the ball home from close range.
  15. Valencia schemer Pablo Aimar has left Valencia to join Real Zaragoza in a €11 million (£7.5 million) deal. The talented Argentina international had fallen out of favour at Estadio Mestalla but his reputation is such in Spain that his capture will be seen as a noticeable coup for Zaragoza. Aimar has put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal and will take home €1.5 million (£1 million) a year for his exertions having concurred on personal terms with Real officials. During his stay at Valencia Aimar picked up two Liga titles, a Uefa Cup and a European Super Cup as he quickly established himself as a keen favourite of the club's faithful. On his day, Aimar, who made only fleeting cameo appearances at the World Cup, has proven he has few equals and he will be eager to capture such form in the somewhat less intense surrounds of Zaragoza.
