DAMIEN Duff is hoping soon to be back in the Champions League – with Newcastle United. The £5m midfielder – in line to make his debut this afternoon against PSV Eindhoven at St James's Park – is an experienced European campaigner from his Chelsea days. Duff has three Champions League campaigns under his belt from his time at Stamford Bridge, and the 27-year-old believes Newcastle have what it takes to return to the competition after an absence of several seasons. But in the meantime Duff is determined to play his part in guiding his new team into the UEFA Cup proper, with Glenn Roeder's men facing a two-legged qualifier against Latvian side Ventspils next month. Duff said: "I've had a taste of the Champions League over the past couple of years. "Newcastle were in the Champions League four years ago. I didn't get to any of the teams then, but I can only imagine what the atmosphere was like. "Hopefully we'll get back there soon." He added: "But Europe's Europe, and the UEFA Cup's still massive. "There's a group stage as well, and I can't wait to play in it." United were last in the Champions League in 2002-03, when they reached the second knockout stage under Sir Bobby Robson. Duff is a close friend of new team-mates Shay Given and Stephen Carr, who he knows from the Republic of Ireland set-up.And their presence in the St James's Park dressing room helped make his mind up on a move to Tyneside. "Shay's a great lad, and one of my best mates in the Irish team, along with Carrsy," said Duff."They're two great players, and there's a great bunch of lads here. I'm looking forward to working with them."

Newcastle defender Titus Bramble will be offered the chance to extend his career on Tyneside after Glenn Roeder outlined his determination to retain the services of a player in the final year of his current contract. The 24-year-old has established himself as Roeder's first-choice centre-half and, although talks have yet to begin, the United boss will instruct Freddie Shepherd to open negotiations as soon as possible. Bramble can look ahead to the start of his fifth campaign at St James's Park confident that he will start against Wigan on August 19. And it looks as though the improvements the former Ipswich favourite has made over the last 12 months will be rewarded by his admiring manager. "I have been very pleased with Titus," said Roeder, who saw the former England Under-21 international form a promising partnership with Moore during the closing weeks of last season. "He did very well for me and for this football club then, and he has done very well again this season. "Titus is now in the final year of his contract. That side of things is looked after by the chairman but he consults me about whether I want to keep a player or not and I'm very happy with Titus." Bramble will be able to engineer a lucrative free transfer away from St James's Park in the New Year and, while his first priority will be to strengthen a defence that has been weakened this summer, it will be a situation Roeder will be keen to resolve as soon as possible. Robbie Elliott has already left Newcastle after failing to agree a new contract, and Jean-Alain Boumsong's future remains in doubt after a bid from Monaco to sign the player on loan was rejected. The French club are only willing to pay half of the defender's £35,000-a-week wages - an offer Shepherd will not consider.

Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick is set to join Manchester United on Monday after the clubs agreed a fee for the 25-year-old midfielder. A statement read: "Manchester United and Tottenham can confirm that they have agreed terms for the transfer. "The transfer is conditional upon the player agreeing personal terms and he will also be required to pass a medical that will take place on Monday." The fee has not been disclosed but is believed to be close to £15m. Carrick had two years left on his deal at White Hart Lane, but had rejected a new contract offer in the wake of United's persistent interest. "This is a move that Michael wants to make," said Spurs boss Martin Jol. "We have given him every reason to stay, but he has asked to be allowed to leave." The sale of Carrick represents a massive profit for Spurs, who signed him from West Ham for £2.75m two years ago. Carrick started for England against Ecuador at the World Cup West Ham are reported to be in for a windfall when the transfer goes through, with a sell-on clause included as part of the deal which took him to White Hart Lane. The midfielder has won seven England caps, making his debut when coming on as a substitute against Mexico in 2001. He was part of England's World Cup squad but made just one appearance in Germany, in the 1-0 win over Ecuador in the first game of the knockout stages. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson stepped up his pursuit of Carrick once it became clear that the transfer of United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid for a reported £10.2m would go through. However, Ferguson denied reports that he is also keen to sign Carrick's Tottenham team-mate Jermain Defoe. "There has not been any interest from us," said Ferguson. "As far as the Tottenham situation is concerned, we made a move for Michael Carrick - but that is all we did. "He is the only Tottenham player we are interested in at the moment and I think it will stay that way." Jol's determination to hold out for a fee which closely matched their £20m valuation of the player has given them more transfer cash to spend. Jol has already signed 22-year-old Benoit Assou-Ekotto from Lens and spent £10.9m on Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov but missed out on Chelsea's left-winger Damien Duff. The summer signing of Ivory Coast international Didier Zokora will make Carrick's departure somewhat less painful for Jol, who can now continue his search for a left-sided midfielder in earnest.

Juventus have offered defender Jonathan Zebina in a swap deal for Newcastle United's Jean-Alain Boumsong, according to reports emanating out of France. The Old Lady lost both their star centre backs Lilian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro to Real Madrid earlier in the summer and coach Didier Deschamps is trying to rebuild for the tough challenge that lies ahead. His team have been relegated to Serie B for the coming season for their involvement in the Italian match-fixing scandal and Deschamps has reportedly earmarked two French internationals to lead the back line. Monaco captain Gael Givet, who has also been linked to Villarreal, and Boumsong (pictured) were both part of the Bleus squad which made it to the World Cup finals in Germany and Deschamps hopes they can lead his side's resurgence up the leagues. "It is true I had contact with Juve and that the club wants to hire me for next season. But it is not the only trail," Givet told L'Equipe. "There are other clubs which have recently shown an interest. But I am under contract with Monaco until June 2009, and if the officials want to refuse my departure, I will stay. "On Thursday afternoon I talked with Marc Keller and Jean-Luc Ettori and they told me they absolutely want to keep me. On Monday I will take stock with my agent and the chairman and vice-chairman. "I know what I owe Monaco. If the officials offer me a chance to leave that would be fine, but if they refused categorically I would go back to work." Bianconeri are also reported to be chasing two Brazilians in Udinese defender Felipe Da Silva and Corinthians midfielder Ricardinho. "Felipe? Yes, we are thinking about him," Juve general manager Alessio Secco confirmed. No official negotiations have opened with either side yet, but Ricardinho has a European passport so there would be no issue regarding EU statuses. Deschamps has already announced that no more players will be leaving the Stadio Delle Alpi, but Spanish reports still suggest that Valencia are ready to offer Juve €15 million (£10.2 million) for Argentinian midfielder Mauro German Camoranesi. Both he and Zlatan Ibrahimovic's futures remain in doubt.

In fairness though why is it any worse to have a visable tattoo when you consider some of the states you see in so called half decent companies. Many women walk about with "war paint on" that looks like it has been applied by a 5 year old, others walk about bright orange. How is this worse than a tattoo?
