What happens to old police cars?

What happens to old police cars? I've seen a few police cars recently, they're trying to crack down on speeding around Glasgow. All of them BMWs or Mercedes 4x4s, none of them older than 54 plates.

Why don't police have to drive their cars until they're knackered, you never see the police driving around in clapped-out old escorts or peugeots.

I've seen a few old police astras being turned into fire brigade cars, but what happens to the rest of them?

Aye they auction them off.

Yeah usually they strip them off all their gear and then auction them.

They can be a good buy because although they'll have a lot of miles on them their maintenance is second to none.... or at least was once upon a time, these days with the police under funding maybe not.

Same reason they never get done for driving whilst talking on their mobiles tbh.

Speaking from an insiders point of view - ie i drive them, the cars are auctioned off at a speciific mileage usually between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. the servicing in the police is now piss poor, 10 yrs ago was very good.

All the cars are usually dropping to bits after they are 12 months old, as they are driven very hard and for 24 hours a day because of the shifts.

So they would generally nowadays not be a good buy, and the back seat will no doubt stink of pondlife.
