The injured England Under-21 star had the chance to join the Yellow Canaries last summer before he signed a three-year deal at St James’s Park. Back then Taylor was in contract limbo with United, who dragged their heels over offering him a new contract. However, the defender, along with a clutch of other Newcastle stars, has became unsettled amid confusion over United’s future. The Chronicle understands that Taylor sat down with Alan Shearer at the end of the season and discussed his future, with the London-born ace optimistic about next season despite relegation from the Premier League. Yet after becoming unsettled due to the club’s uncertain position and a lack of urgency in appointing a permanent boss, Taylor – who ideally wants to stay on under Shearer – is set to consider his options. And with Chris Hughton in caretaker control the discontent in the dressing room is only likely to increase, with Habib Beye, Taylor and Sebastien Bassong all linked with moves away from Tyneside. Fenerhahce finished the season in the Turkish SuperLiga in fourth position, meaning they will not be able to dangle the carrot of Champions League football in front of Taylor. But they will play in the newly-formed Europa League next term, requiring success in the third qualifying round to make it into the group stages. Taylor would also link up once again with ex-Toon playmaker Emre, who signed for the Turks last season. West Ham have also been linked with a move for Taylor who will not be short of options if he was to hand in a transfer request. Taylor, though, will wait until the August transfer window to see what the developments are at St James’s Park before making a decision, by which time new owners could be in place with Shearer in charge. Meanwhile, England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce has saluted Taylor’s efforts for his country, despite him not appearing in the European Championship finals in Sweden.
