You've got 100 grand

Recommended Posts

Right, you've got 100,000 of your English pounds* and you're going to spend them on a motorcar. But ha, not just one automobile but three.

1 - A car for every day use, going to the shops, going to the office

2 - Weekend run about for those days when it's not raining

3 - Track car/bike

What, which and why?

Per me -

1 - M5 =~ 60000

2 - VAuxhall VX 220 Turbo =~25000

3 - Caterham7 1.4 =~15000

Me having 100K is hypothetical or 100K is itself hypothetical?

I'll stop buying lottery tickets if it's the latter.

And you're not allowed to bank it, the inland revenue will have a field day

Think of it as car tokens. To spend on cars. Like Book tokens. Real value 0.000001p

I'll buy Tonka toy cars and distribute them to needy children. I enjoy public transport too much to start going about in cars.

I'd go to the hypothetical bank and borrow another hypothetical £80k then go get myself an Aston Martin Vanquish S V12... actually I'd probably need to borrow an additional hypothetical £20k to insure the bugger!

Well I am king pedant but in this case I was just looking for a discussion of money as a theoretic notion. You could have all the money in the world, but on a desert island you'd be as poor as a goat and all that.

In practice though, you'd still have £100k.

In practice you'd have an IOU for £100K, but it's actual worth would be less than a flare gun.

In practice you'd have £100k. It's actual worth is debatable.

I have £10 in my pocket but 'in practice' it's an IOU, that's why it says "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of". It's worth is theoretically £10 until I get the gold bullion I'm due.

It's not an IOU since you can't exchange for its worth anymore although it had a value in silver at one time, hence the name 'Sterling'. You haven't been able to for years. You could just as easily argue that you don't own your house/car/etc. since 'ownership' is a theoretical concept. I would argue though that if you have £100k in currency, you still have it no matter where you are. Although its relative value would vary depending on circumstances. Just like the relative value of £100k's worth of silver, gold, diamonds would.

Agreed.

Society puts the theory into practice. Take yourself out of society and the theory breaks down.

57787[/snapback]

What do you reckon the geezer's iPod in you av is worth?
