ALAN PARDEW has stressed that continuity at Newcastle United was his key motivation when building his new backroom team at St James Park.

 

Pardew got his side off to an incredible start with a win against Liverpool to lift United up to eighth in the Premier League, but he insists the hard work has only just began.

 

The new United boss has welcomed goalkeeper coach Andy Woodman who arrives from Charlton Athletic today and also promoted reserve-team assistant Steve Stone and senior Academy coach Willie Donachie to the first-team training base.

 

Pardew will also introduce another new coach later this week, while Peter Beardsley will work with the development squad at United after a solid start to life with the high-flying second string in the FA Premier Reserve League.

 

Stone has ably assisted Pardew during his first few days at United and, after helping to steer the Magpies to a 3-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday, this prompted the new gaffer to promote him.

 

Pardew told the Chronicle: Steve Stone is somebody I have leant on heavily in the last few days, and I have really enjoyed my time working with him, even if it has been short.

 

I am going to give him an improved contract to come and work with the first team.

 

He has the respect of the players.

 

And I always want continuity when I come into a club.

 

And with talented youngsters such as Samuel Adjei, Phil Airey, Bradden Inman and Stevie Folan coming through the ranks at United from the youth set-up, this has also resulted in a promotion for ex-Scotland international Donachie, who has an excellent reputation after working at both Oldham Athletic and Manchester City as a first-team coach.

 

Pardew said: With continuity in mind as well as I am going to move Willie Donachie up to the first-team area from the Academy. He will work with Peter Beardsley and maybe cross over to myself on occasion.

 

We also have room for one more coach and I am still working on that.

 

Ive got about four or five names and I am not sure which one yet I have to get the balance right.

 

The United blueprint remains bringing through homegrown players through the ranks at St James Park, with the success of Andy Carroll and Tim Krul testament of that theory in the last two years.

 

And Pardew sees both Donachie who helped transform Oldham with Joe Royle from Second Division no-hopers into a Premier League outfit and Stone as an integral part of that.

 

Pardew said: My idea is to have a young coaching team and to grow with the team.

 

One of the reasons I have taken Willie Donachie out of the Academy is because he has that first-team experience as well.

 

Willie is a really good technical coach and I like to have that at the training ground because he ticks that box.

 

It means I can bring in another one of Steve Stones type, and I think that will give us a nice balance at the training ground where all the players have got a coach to lean on and they can find somebody that they trust in a special way.

 

Its not just first-team coaches, it can be a junior coach that influences you.

 

 

So its Steve Stone, Willie Donachie and myself at the moment plus one other.

 

There are plenty of people there.

 

And with Beardsley continuing his work with the younger players at Newcastle, Pardew added: Peter prefers that area, and thats fine.

 

He hasnt got much experience as a coach although he was outstanding as a player one of the best we produced.

 

That brings its own special quality to the training ground too, having what is essentially a football legend there.

 

There is plenty of technical expertise there and I am happy with the way it is panning out.

 

Woodman was on Tyneside today to sign for the Magpies as keeper coach, but speculation that Fulham coach Ray Lewington was due to link up with Newcastle has proved inaccurate.

 

Meanwhile, talk of USA star Landon Donovan coming to Newcastle on loan in January has also been dismissed.

More concerning that he didnt think to drop Ranger back to the right wing and shift Barton inside. Which is what anyone with an ounce of sense would have done.

I think there were a few times in recent games where Hughton needed to turn to the bench and have someone he trusted tell him it's time for a change / make a suggestion. Unfortunately he didn't have that 'luxury'.
