Now then nerds

I have two external drives (no not of CT ilk) that I have got a lot of old work stuff backed up on.  Do people even bother with external HDD anymore or are they backed up on Google Drive or the like?

Similar with old photos.  I have photos in several places. Some backed up on Google Drive, some on GoPro cloud that I have and I also have some on Google Photos. I was wondering do I just move them all to Google Photos.

I've got all stuff backed up on Google drive and/or Google photos, ultimately it's the same cloud. It's £2.50 per month for 200 gigs I think, but I'm 2/3 full and the next upgrade is too costly. Don't like having it all on third party storage and have bits and bobs on my phone and various drives, but trying to synch is not possible anymore. And if you archive stuff, realistically you're not seeing that again anyway.

My plan has always been to just take a few favourite photos and make movies or albums out of them to keep forever, but can't be arsed to do that even.

Miss the days of just a few physical photos in a way, but they're also all in a box in the attic.

Aye I've got 2TB with Google because I want to basically put everything in one place rather than carrying a HD with work stuff on.  Plus my laptop is getting old and I don't want that to collapse without having photos backed up.  I CBA with external HDD.  I have one for work and then another for old stuff and I just back them up and never look at them again.  But with photos I do scroll through at times just for some nostalgia.

You’ve got 2TB storage and it’s not enough?

That's a fuck ton of porn.

I've got about 100 Gbs of photos taken over 20 years as I was early digital camera adopter, think it's about 9000 photos which is frankly ridiculous anyway. 2 Tb though?

It's not just photos. I've got a load of work stuff on an external HDD that is 500gb on its own. That's gonna go on there. Well that was my thinking. I'll keep that HDD just in case but any updates I'll add to my Google drive.

So if you have 2TB with google then what are you actually asking?

Yes having everything in one place is the easiest thing depending on your setup. I used iCloud for my phone and iDrive (different company) for all my work stuff.

Basically if people have all data in one place or have photos in one and then data in another. Personally I'm leaning towards the former.

External hard drives are notorious for failing @Christmas Tree  at least try and have them backed up somewhere else too. As others have alluded to you can get very inexpensive cloud storage from the likes of apple, google and prime. You might even already have it for free with one of those. But even the upgrades for more storage don’t cost much.

Didn’t know that. Thought external was the ultimate back up. Most phone stuff photos is backed up on Apple and all Laptop stuff is on one drive.

And really important stuff like passwords is in a notebook in the drawer. I’ve turned into my mam and dad
