Newcastle's teenage striker Nile Ranger marked his first international start on Wednesday evening with a goal for England's U19 side against their Bosnian counterparts. In the first of a trio of European Championship Elite Qualifying Round ties played over the coming days, Ranger lined up at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium - a venue he may be visiting at club level next season... And although he missed the target with one effort in the closing stages, Ranger headed home England's second goal on 85 minutes to seal a 2-0 success. England's next fixture sees them face Slovakia on Friday at Bradford City, before meeting Scotland at Sheffield United on Monday. Both games have 7pm kickoffs.

Alan Shearer to discuss four-year deal at Newcastle
Jimbo replied to Scottish Mag's topic in Newcastle Forum
Alan Shearer may agree four-year contract with Newcastle at weekend Another day of talks at Newcastle United's training ground concluded without Alan Shearer signing a four-year contract as the club's manager, but there is quiet optimism that a deal will be concluded by the end of the week. Shearer will not sign a contract until his lawyers have pored over the nuances of every piece of small print and there is consequently nothing unusual in his taking days rather than hours to reach agreement with Mike Ashley, Newcastle's owner. Ashley spent six hours yesterday in negotiations with Shearer on Tyneside but the multimillionaire retailer played no part in today's deliberations. Instead Shearer – who arrived at the club's weekday Benton base at 8.30am and did not leave until after 4pm – was locked in discussions with Derek Llambias, Newcastle's managing director, and Iain Dowie, the assistant manager. It is understood much hard bargaining went on and, although a relaxed-looking Shearer smiled and signed autographs as he headed home, a source close to the talks revealed that they may not be concluded too quickly. "Talks are ongoing but there could still be a way to go before an agreement is signed," said the source. "Alan is desperate to help Newcastle and take on the job because of his love of the club." Even so it is understood Shearer wants Ashley to invest a further sum of around £30m in Newcastle, with £15m-£20m of it being invested on buying new players. "The state of the squad is part of the negotiations," said the source. "It desperately needs reshaping and freshening. The Championship is about pace and power and the squad doesn't have a lot of that." The mooted appointments of John Carver and Rob Lee to Newcastle's coaching staff were also thought to be on the agenda. Meanwhile Keith Harris, the investment banker hired to try to sell Newcastle last autumn, before the club was taken off the market in late December, dismissed reports that he had spent Tuesday on Tyneside talking to a consortium keen to take over from Ashley. "Categorically untrue," said Harris, explaining he had been in Newcastle on non-football business. The chairman of Seymour Pierce makes regular trips to the region in relation to an involvement he has with Halfords. -

so what's his excuse this season? couldn't be arsed? No Kieron Dyer or Antoine Sibierski, seriously, I think they made a difference to Martins game, the fact that none of our so called strikers have had an impact this season is as much to do with our midfield as much as it is to do with their own failings.

1- What would your assement of your season be in comparison with your pre-season hopes and expectations? Under Keegan I was hoping for entertaining football, an improvment on the previous season and a finish around 10th or 11th. 2- What would your season highlight be? The win over Middlesbrough 3- What would your season low-light be? Ashley backing Wise over Keegan and seeing Keegan walk out with his principles 4- A large majority of footballer suporters seem to have taken a certain degree of glee in your downfall this season. Why do you think that this is and what do you think needs to be done to change peoples perception of the club and its supporters? We always seem to be in the headlines, usually for the wrong reasons, and teams with a greater level of success find that frustrating that we continue to be in the news, we have a cult like following in the city of Newcastle due to being a one team city, therefore the Toon mean more to the city of Newcastle than Liverpool mean to the City of Liverpool or Man United mean to Manchester etc, this is something that London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester can never ever relate to, and never will. 5- Would do you need to bring in during the summer and who would you like to see leave the club? We need a new owner ! we need a midfield that can create goals, we need a strike force that can score them, surprisingly I don't think the defence is that bad, other than Coloccini. Specifically player wise, Owen, Barton, Smith, Geremi, Shola, Butt, Duff, Coloccini, Gonzales, Cacapa. 6- What should the aim for next season be? Rebuilding, hopefully promotion, although I'm not counting on it.

Fiorentina are interested in Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins. La Nazione says Fiorentina sports chief Pantaleo Corvino sees the Nigeria international as an ideal foil for centre-forward Alberto Gilardino. Martins is expected to be sold by Newcastle following their relegation.
