That film was the definitive 'aimed at the masses' movie and they shouldn't have to (and don't) appreciate the technical side of the movie to enjoy it but by the same token plenty of people (mainly girlfriends and their suffering boyfriends?) enjoyed it and DiCaprio dies, so it can't be all bad! If we're talking Cameron, Pearl Harbour was much worse.

I couldn't stand the tv series, and I've never heard the radio stuff, really enjoyed the first 3 books though, immensely. The last 2 were just a step too far. I'd recommend giving it a go, the book's as much about aliens as 'Gulliver's Travels' is about little people.

Well I thought you were being rather the angry young man in this thread but I don't see why I should take any credit for that. If you look at what I said in context it really had very little to do with you. I was having a bit of banter with Mags and she (obviously joking, though you never know with those crazy Yanks!) suggested shooting immigrants, I said we should shoot ALL foreigners and you were really only mentioned because you "kind of suggested" the same thing (a complete eradicaton of the human race).

Jesus that was awful, I was just flicking through the movie channels and I think I lasted about half an hour before I realised there was no possibility that it could be any good. The 'word play' between Affleck and Lopez was excruciating. Not a Gilliam fan then? I like that you highlight the kill no-one extreme as unfeasible but not the kill everyone extremity. My point about the middle ground is that we're all in it, just that it's quite vast. I suspect I may be the victim of a comic genius.

To say there's a left, a right and a middle ground is virtually as simplistic as to say everything is black or white. Every person you pass in the street is a potential threat, the only way to be truly safe is to kill every one of them. The opposite end of the spectrum would see good Samaritan types, assuming the best in everyone, showering them in flowers and never protecting themselves. In between are an infinity of mind-sets where most of us stick our flags. There is no right answer, we've discussed it from the beginning of recorded history and will do until the end. I'm interested in reading some of Banks' sci-fi stuff, I read alot of sci-fi fantasy when I was a kid so I don't bother with it much anymore but I recently read the first of the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy and whilst I thought the world Pullman* had built up was second to none the writing itself was really poor. I'm really impressed with Banks' other stuff (although I do worry about his mental state sometimes) so I thought 'Iain M Banks' might be worth a lash, any suggestions? *I have to give JK Rowling a lot more credit after reading him, although I still grimace when somebody refers to her work as literature.
