I'm not sure if their fans have the will to demand a rebirth, being a Premier League club (even if it's in name only) seems to be enough for the majority of Sunderland fans. Some on RTG genuinely said before their loss to Chelsea "This is what it's all about, playing the best teams in the world". Now, I've enjoyed watching us go toe-to-toe with Ferguson's Man Utd, Wenger's Arsenal and Mourinho's Chelsea, but the point wasn't to stare wide-eyed as the superstars roll into town, it was to compete. They genuinely seemed to be delighted that little old Sunderland got to play hosts to the Big Boys. Like Burton Albion are doing for us this weekend. Going forward, the best thing for them is to draw on their decent record of producing young players, stick with a manager like Moyes, and build an identity that isn't the "turd that won't flush". But that is most likely going to come at the cost of their Premier League.

Oh sure, but I meant that they don't even get the top of c£1m every so often by being on tv.

Burnley, Boro and Hull will get mentions because they're the promoted sides. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City and Spurs will be pored over because they're "big clubs". Leicester will get loads of coverage this year because they're champions and doing shite. There's 10 teams ahead of sunderland in the interest stakes already. Then you've Everton and West Ham who're decent sized clubs that have it in them to either flirt with Europe or Relegation in any given season. Pardew is Box Office, so Palace get more coverage than they should. To most neutrals Sunderland are just that side that should have been relegated a while ago and haven't been, they don't play attractive football, they aren't experiencing huge tumult on or off the pitch (that's of interest to neutrals), they're just not very good.

Even before the debt revelations, the consensus seemed to be that relegation was literally the worst thing that can happen. And despite clubs like West Ham, Southampton, Leicester and us (twice) showing that you can bounce back from relegation and be stronger for the experience, they think that way leads to rack and ruin. With their financial problems, it might be a big ask to bounce back at the first time of asking, but the club needs an overhaul and they'll never do that if they're too terrified of the drop to risk a new approach. The Championship is more forgiving.
