My understanding is that they are getting the suppliers of those parts to open new production sites in the UK next to the Nissan plant. Tarrifs are not not going to be an issue imo as at minimum, a free trade deal will be struck. No way EU wants the extra tarrif costs on all their cars coming here.
-
Or they do what Nissan are doing and get overseas parts suppliers to set up in the U.K. creating more jobs.
-
I don’t disagree with the last bits but since losing a majority it’s been one painful step at a time. Could well be that in return for backing on the backstop she agrees to chuck chequers and take Canada. The DUP will probably take another bribe. Arlene is in with Barnier tomorrow so we’ll see how this goes. I do wonder if there’s a bit of choreography going on.
-
In fact, here we go
-
No, but the idea is that if the EU agree to the customs union, we will agree to regulatory alignment on Ireland.
-
No, the backstop agreed in December was for the whole U.K. The EU then tried to amend this in April with their legal text and we have been in stalemate ever since. Regardless whether you like it or not, this is a negogiation and a compromise will have to be agreed. This, hot off the press from The Times today.
-
That was to the whole chequers package. This is mainly just about solving the backstop. It’s been the sensible option since day 1 and will be the option we agree. It sorts the withdrawal agreement and gives the Brexit lobby at least 2 years (could be extended), to put up or shut up about technical solutions.
-
The EU have already offered the custom union as a back stop to NI. So they will budge when it suits.
-
Not neccesarily, for a few reasons. 1. I think we’d be able to overcome frictions at the border as we do for most goods arriving from outside the EU using tech. 2. The article Renton quotes talks about WTO costing Nissan £500 mill a year. That’s well within a government’s ability to smooth over by various means. E.G. There’s a massive hi tech park under construction next door to Nissan to allow some of Nissans overseas suppliers to set up on the doorstep. 3. I just can’t ever see this getting to no deal past March. If we approach that scenario May will go or Government goes or election / refferendum takes over and article 50 extended. Everybody is grandstanding as the negogiations reach their climax if as I suspect, a good deal is agreed, I think it will be very hard in the cold light of day for Labour and the ERG to vote it down.
-
But this is a negotiation, both sides are desperate for a deal and the U.K. wide backstop is the only goer in town. As for the 2nd point, how do they handle illegal smuggling now? I imagine it will be all tied up in regulations over the next 2 years as the details are thrashed out and at some point the DUP will be thrown under the bus.
-
So you couldn’t.
-
Answer the question on Nissan first and then I’ll put you right here as well.
-
Im cherry picking Ive quoted a paragraph from the article YOU linked, which clearly states they fear a no deal scenario and going on to WTO rules. You find me a sentence in the article that backs up your claim they are dead if we leave the SM. Not your spin, a sentence. I’m waiting
-
The Irish backstop will end up being a UK wide customs arrangement.
-
If Britain leaves the EU without securing an agreement for continued frictionless trade – the “hard Brexit” outcome – Britain’s trading relationships would be regulated by World Trade Organisation rules, which do not allow for agreed product standards, and therefore will require customs checks at the borders with Europe. The rules also impose tariffs, including 10% on cars, 4.5% on car parts. This is what they are clearly worried about, leaving without a deal. Nowhere does it say they will not survive unless we stay in the single market. That is, as usual, just your made up negative spin........ You lying thicko.

Two more: customs union
-
Have you read the article you linked? Not only does it talk about WTO rules and needing to remain competitive, it also includes their statement today which warns about the dangers of WTO rules. IE NO DEAL!!! As I’ve told you repeatedly we will agree a cracking deal that will allow Nissan to continue to trade profitably with Zero tarrifs and no friction. I also warned you back in January that it would get very hairy before the deal was done. So so this is what’s going to happen and I suggest you bookmark it. A deal will get done, the pound will rise and the economy will surge and then we will have nearly two years to start implementing all these lovely trade deals.
-
Come on Fox is just a front man shaking a few hands. It’s the lawyers and shadowy civil servants who do the deals.
-
No, all the issues in that article relate to WTO rules and profitability. WTO rules only apply in a NO DEAL scenario.
-
We don’t have to accept anything, but yes, deals will be agreed that benefit both countries more than they do now.
-
Double dare with jam on. Eu external tarrifs eg: 36% on dairy products 12% on clothing 11% on food
-
See my other post.
-
I can only assume you are talking about a no deal scenario which IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
-
Not dodged. You either didn’t understand the benefits of a one to one deal or chose to ignore.
-
I’m not explaining it again
