Strachan – who is set to be confirmed as the Teessiders’ new boss within the next 48 hours – is a long-term admirer of the Geordie target man. And, although Boro cannot offer guaranteed Premier League football, Strachan hopes that Newcastle’s pinched finances and ongoing ownership saga will persuade them to listen to an offer for England Under-21 international Carroll. Although he has impressed in spells at St James’s Park, Carroll has a chequered history off the field on Tyneside. But it might still take serious persuasion to convince the 20-year-old him to join a rival Championship club. Boro have just splashed out over £1.5m for Ledger and they're expected to sign him for £3m or so in January.
