I've no idea. I was just imagining Schumacher's face when he heard a stewards panel including Damon Hill had demoted him out of the points.

 

He was quizzed about it (Damon being a steward) before the penalty was announced. Michael's response? "He's (Damon) a good guy... I don't expect a penalty."

 

We just need JFV to be steward at Canada now...

Monaco is always a fucking dull race. Yes, it has history and all that, but modern F1 cars have no chance of overtaking unless you get a situation like Alonso being at the back of the grid. I'd rather see Monaco and Hungary go before the usual Silverstone bashing from Andy Warhol's midget twin. And all these new tracks are soulless and dull as well.

I couldn't disagree more. Sure, it's difficult to overtake but we need diversity on the F1 calendar and certainly not the full of 'dull as fuck' monotonous Tilke-designed circuits.

 

Melbourne, Monte-Carlo, Montreal, Silverstone, Spa, Monza & Suzuka should feature on the calendar without question. I would have also included the original Hockenheim until they fucked with it 10 years ago...

I'd go along with that, other than Hockenheim, which was basically 3 massive straights joined together by chicanes. I'd add Interlagos which has a lovely selection of slow & fast corners, long straights and dips & rises.

Suzuka fits that criteria as well, more of a challenge than Fuji.

Almost Dr Ken - you're neglecting the stadium section which was tight and twisting and basically meant that the teams couldn't simply go for a massively low downforce setup. The straights used to test the engines to the limits and lets not forget the weather aspect. Never more evident than in its last year (Barrichello's maiden win for Ferrari) when it was bone dry in the stadium section but absolutely chucking it down at the second chicane. It just offered something completely different to all the other circuits on the calendar but at the same-time, massively challenging. We can thank a disgruntled ex-Mercedes employee for it being butchered though...

 

Interlagos is a fabulous circuit but the facilities and organisation are absolutely diabolical. Used to boil my piss how Ecclestone would criticise Silverstone to the point of threatning (empty threat we know now of course) their continuity and Interlagos would get away with murder....

 

Now, who is the promoter of that event again?

The first half of the race was exciting I thought: Alonso cutting through the field (with some excellent in-car footage), the safety car sessions throwing the tyre strategy into the air, cars getting out of shape and perilously close to the barriers. The second half, things settled down and it was a bit more staid.

I'd go along with that list, and add Interlagos. Yes, it is old and decrepid, but the track is great, the atmosphere seems good, and its basic facilities are a nice counterpoint to those airbrushed, soulless tracks in obscure countries with no interest in racing (e.g. China, Turkey, Malaysia, Bahrain). Monaco is unique, and offers the drivers the drivers a real challenge, but for spectators, its fucking boring. Valencia is worse though.

Of the new races, I'd stick with Singapore - and not because it's run at night either - it could be run in the day and be still as great. A fantastic street circuit and unique in its own way. Not really seen much comment in the press but I love the way it cuts underneath the grandstand towards the end of the lap - must be an awesome view to be sitting there.

 

I agree about Valencia. Promised so much but has delivered nothing. It's a poor man's Monaco IMO, run around what appears to be commerical docks rather than a glamourous harbour.

 

I'm hopeful that the New York GP will be a superb street circuit too but I have reservations until it's seen for real.

 

I'm still amazed they've never held an F1 race at Macau tbh.

Macau.....I remember seeing the race weekend they have there on Hong Kong TV in the early 90's. The F3 race was won by some guy called David Coulthard I seem to remember. I cannot see an F1 race there for a few reasons:

 

1. The track is surely too tight for an F1 race-the hairpin is even worse than the one in Monaco.

2. Macau is a pretty shit place if I'm honest. All there is are a few casinos and hotels.

3. It is too near Hong Kong, and Hong Kong would probably be a far more 'glamourous' street circuit race. If that race included the Cross Harbour tunnel, it could be pretty spectacular. HK has that huge airport at Chek Lap Kok as well.

 

Singapore is probably the best of the new tracks. I'd keep that race. Too early to say about Abu Dhabi, but the scale of it is mind boggling.

Compare it to Phoenix used in 1990-91 or Caesar's Palace car park in the 80s and it's a wider venue. The sport has been overly sanitised since Senna was killed to make the circuits ultra wide and the spectator areas miles from the circuit. It's why I'm glad Canada is back - concrete walls down narrow straights which take no prisoners - a true driver's circuit.

 

Bahrain, China, Malaysia, Turkey, Valencia are all shit. I take my hat of to Brundle for pulling, what hair he has left out when the crown prince of Bahrain told him that the new section needed improvement to remove the bumps. Aye cos billiard table circuits is what we want to see, isn't it?

Those tracks are a bit before my time. All I remember is that Macau often had a lot of carnage, and that sort of thing is not approved of these days. It would be one hell of a challenge for the drivers, but there would be no overtaking at all. And I can't stress enough how much Macau has always been in Hong Kong's shadow, and that it is quite a boring place.

 

Those new tracks you mentioned are indeed sanitised rubbish, but their location is all that matters to Bernie and co. Any country with enough £ can have a race. They just need the number of Bernie's favourite designer and a few corporate sponsors. It's a shame, as thesenew countries had a blank sheet, and could have designed some real corkers.

I think Adelaide was an awesome cirtcuit - particularly Brewery Bend onto the Brabham Straight which will always be remembered as the place where Hakkinen was almost killed.

 

When it was announced it was going to Melbourne I was gutted but having witnessed races at both circuits I'd say its hard to choose between them.
