Ray Mears tracks down crazed geordie

TELLY survival expert Ray Mears was drafted in by police to hunt down fugitive gunman Raoul Moat.

 

Mears, who regularly shows off his bushcraft skills on the box, was asked to help armed officers desperate to find the killer during a seven-day manhunt.

 

The 46-year-old TV star was called on to help detectives track Moat’s movements after the gunman fled his makeshift camp.

 

Moat, who had killed one person and maimed two others, shot himself after a six-hour stand-off when he was cornered in Rothbury, Northumberland.

 

Mears, author of The Outdoor Survival Handbook, refused to discuss his involvement. But police sources said they had employed “every available resource”.

 

The presence of a celebrity in the investigation is likely to spark more criticism of the police operation.

 

Yesterday Pc David Rathband, 42, who was blinded when Moat shot him in the face, was finally released from hospital.

 

The dad-of-two was blasted at close range while parked in his patrol car after Moat declared war on police.

 

Doctors at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary could not save his sight.

 

Twin brother Darren said the traffic officer had gone home with wife Kath to start adjusting to his new life.

 

He said: “He’s fine. He’s in remarkable spirits.

 

 

“But he’s very well aware that he’s got a massive road ahead of him.”

 

Pc Rathband, who was shot twice, told Radio 5 Live he was now on the mend.

 

“My facial injuries have all been sorted and it’s just a case of allowing my jaw and face and stuff to knit together,’’ he said.

 

“I have to come back for an examination of my left eye to see if there’s something they can salvage.”

 

Bouncer Moat, 37, went on the rampage after ex-lover Samantha Stobbart dumped him while he was in jail and lied she was dating a policeman to scare him away.

 

He shot 22-year-old Samantha, leaving her scarred for life, killed her new boyfriend Chris Brown, 29, and fired on Pc Rathband before going on the run.
