There are good areas though, where there is a more relaxed atmosphere. Sadly, these seem to be disappearing at an alarming rate - witness the demise of Jesmond.

Just my experience, though to be fair, in London, it's easier to avoid the bad areas as it's so much bigger. The tube though is a relatively safe place and there are a lot of staff. Still, the point about brawling IS true.
