On a similar note what is so good about the Cats pyjamas? They don't even wear them. And what about the bees knees?

Centre-back Jonathan Woodgate has pulled out of the England squad for the Euro 2008 qualifier in Israel on Saturday because of injury. Woodgate has a knee problem and adds to manager Steve McClaren's growing casualty list in defence. Right-back Gary Neville is out injured, left-back Ashley Cole is suspended and Micah Richards has a calf problem. Striker Darren Bent also withdrew and Luke Young, Gareth Barry and David Nugent were late call-ups.

Newcastle United's young defender Paul Huntington is to sign a new contract which will tie him to St James' Park until 2010. The 19-year-old defender's agent former United striker Imre Varadi was on Tyneside to tie up the deal today and it will all be signed and sealed in the next 48 hours. And at a time when there is so much uncertainty about the United futures of fellow central defenders Titus Bramble, Craig Moore and Oguchi Onyewu this is a tremendous vote of confidence for the teenager from Cumbria. Especially as it comes exactly a week since Huntington was given the runaround by Alkmaar right-winger Julian Jenner in last Thursday night's UEFA Cup defeat in Holland. But what must be said about Huntington, as indeed also in the cases of Nobby Solano, Damian Duff, Steven Taylor, David Edgar, and Peter Ramage, is that they have all filled in at full-back, which is not their position. And that is because of the amount of time experienced full-backs Stephen Carr and Celestine Babayaro have spent on the treatment table this season. Glenn Roeder watched Huntington in last night's reserve game with Sheffield United at Kingston Park playing in his preferred central defensive role. And the United boss told me today: "You could see young Hunty has been playing in our first team because he was a class above any other player on the field last night. "Going back he was one of my Academy boys when I first took over and while some people may not have been sure about him I took a shine to him straightaway. "At the start of the season I had him pencilled in to blood him in a couple of games, but because of our injury crisis he is in double figures. "He has had a longer run in the first team than even he expected and he has not let anyone down. Yes he found it hard in Holland last Thursday night but it is tough in Europe and that boy Jenner is a very very good young winger indeed. "And let's not forget that Huntington was playing at left-back which, if the truth was known, is his least favoured position. But, like the rest of the players we have had to ask to stand in a full-back, he has never complained. "When he was given a chance to play in his best position of centre- half against West Ham at St James' Park at end of January he did very well alongside David Edgar when he came on as substitute. "He has a lot of qualities. He is 6ft 4ins but needs to improve on his heading. He has pace and is decent enough on the ball and wants to learn - and as a coach I have to say he is easy to work with. "And while he is nowhere near the finished article, I expect him to be challenging our two central defenders next season - whoever they are." This last statement from Roeder is significant and, speaking personally, I will be surprised if Bramble, Moore or Onyewu are still at St James' Park at the start of next season. My view that Newcastle United will never win anything while Bramble is in their team caused a big breach with Sir Bobby Robson, which has never been healed, but it is something I stand by.

Newcastle United have responded to the club's dismal demise in the Uefa Cup by halting new contract talks as they reassess their plans for next season. The Magpies had been in discussion with Titus Bramble, James Milner, Antoine Sibierski and Nolberto Solano about deal extensions, but have decided to postpone talks following the catastrophic defeat in Alkmaar. Bramble, Sibierski and Solano are all out of contract in the summer and, in theory, can discuss terms with other clubs under the Bosman ruling. But the trio are keen to remain at St James's Park next season and have waited for three months to hear if they are going to be offered new deals. However, United chairman Freddie Shepherd has decided to discuss each player's individual circumstances again with manager Glenn Roeder before making a final decision on their futures. The Journal understands that Roeder is keen to see any extensions limited to two years as he feels players perform better on short-term contracts as they know they cannot slip into the comfort zone and allow standards to slip on the pitch. The biggest question mark hangs over Bramble's future as Roeder was far from complimentary about the defender's performance against Alkmaar last week and appears to have made him the scapegoat for a woeful team display in Holland. Roeder has always insisted that the 25-year-old would still be at Newcastle next season and had urged Shepherd to award him a new contract. But talks have been slow to materialise and it remains to be seen whether Roeder feels the same way about the player following his less-than-veiled criticism last week. Bramble, who was dropped to the bench for the miserable 2-0 defeat at Charlton which followed the Magpies' European exit, continues to split opinion among the club's supporters with some arguing the powerful defender just needs a settled partner alongside him to find consistency and others insisting the former Ipswich prospect has suffered too many concentration lapses to be given another chance. Portsmouth and Celtic have been keeping a close eye on Bramble's situation and it will be an interesting few weeks as the player will have to make a decision on whether to wait for United to offer him a new deal or enter into negotiations with another club. A meeting between Shepherd and Bramble's advisers had been scheduled for Monday this week, but it failed to take place. Sibierski is another player Roeder has always maintained he wanted to keep, but talks have also stalled, while Solano has still not discovered if the club will take up the option of another year. Sibierski's advisers are believed to have wanted a two-year contract for their client but Newcastle have offered only a 12-month deal to the 32-year-old. Solano, who, until the defeats by AZ and Charlton, had been a revelation at right-back, is also expected to accept a one-year extension when it is offered. Talks with Milner, who is represented by the Professional Footballers' Association, have been going on since the start of the year but have still not been finalised. Milner, though, has indicated he wants to stay at the club after finally becoming a first-team regular. Shepherd and Roeder must also make a decision on Oguchi Onyewu and Craig Moore in the coming weeks. Onyewu has only signed on loan from Standard Liege until the end of the season, while Moore, who has just returned from a long-term hamstring injury, is also out of contract in the summer.

Why does that not surprise me..

yeah in that league who says he would of made it in the prem - and as i reminded u Chropa does not play for us But thats it. We know Shola isnt going to make it in the prem. At least not as a starting striker. Hes had 5seasons to prove he struggles to get into double figures. Chopra was given about 5 games! His first full season with any club and hes top scorer. Yes its a division lower but that doesnt stop people wanting to buy nugent. Sure, he may not make it in the premiership but we dont know for sure. We do know about shola though. So you don't know if he'll make it in the premiership yet you know he is better than Shola?
-
If you want to play using stats which cannot really be compared, Shola has scored more goals in the premiership this season than Chopra..
-
Good old Taggart...
-
Who is being fickle?, we have an opinion that Shola is a better option than Sib but nowhere is anyone saying hes shite. I'm grateful for the handful of goals he scored but just because he did score them I am not going to say "hes amazing" when clearly hes just an average player. As for in the league he has only scored 3 times one of which in a game that was already over tbh..

Sib has looked very average in the league tbh

Romario, Brazil's legendary striker, is two goals short of reaching a milestone: his 1,000th goal. This year alone, he scored three hat-tricks. If he does not score his 1,000th on Wednesday, his fans will look forward to Sunday, when Vasco confronts its most bitter rival, Flamengo, at Brazil's holy football ground, the Maracana Stadium. So far, Romario has been outscored in world football only by Pele. The legendary player hit the net 1,282 times - the only one to have scored more than 1,000 times. And now the player known by his many fans as Shorty is likely to follow suit. But is he really? Own goal count The goal count was done mainly by Romario himself and in order to speed up the process, he recently took part in a series of friendly matches and played short seasons for squads in the US and in Australia that would make Accrington Stanley look like Manchester United. In Brazil, the local press acknowledges that Romario is nearly there, but says that the numbers are somewhat debatable. Football's greatest striker has reservations about Romario's claim Placar, one of Brazil's leading football magazines, claims Romario's personal stats credit him with 100 goals more than he has really scored. "Currently, there are several parallel counts going on in Brazil," says Joao Carlos Assumpção of SportTV, a Brazilian sports channel. "Some say Romario has seven goals fewer than he claims and others think he should not include the ones he scored during his youth league days, before becoming a professional. "Critics say that the perfect day for goal 1,000 would be on April Fools Day," he says. But many of Brazil's football pundits and fans have chosen not to dig deep in the controversy, for they believe Romario has more than earned the goals he claims. Among them is Tostao, currently one of Brazil's leading football writers and a former legend of the 1970 Brazilian squad. Tostao claims that whether he is about to reach 1,000 or a bit less is irrelevant. "Some goals are being disputed because they were not scored in official games. "But it's Romario's figures and he should be respected. Whether he scored 900, 950 or 1000, that does not diminish the genius of Romario, one of the greatest players of all time." According to Tostao, "he is not only a fabulous striker, but a player that foresees the moves of his opponents in a few seconds. It's a knowledge that goes beyond logic. Romario is absurdly gifted". Amongst those who criticised Romario's "everything counts" strategy was Pele. But Shorty, who has never displayed the reverence that others in Brazil show the mythic player, claims that Pele had no reservations about counting his own goals in unofficial contests. Last weekend, Romario's stats received an official endorsement by no less than Fifa itself. Football's governing body said that the striker's goals scored, say, during a festive game played against The Friends of Luisinho are as legitimate as the ones Pele scored for Brazil's National Army team. Jose Geraldo Couto, who writes a weekly football column in Brazil's leading newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo, says that Romario arouses a "love-him-or-leave-him feeling". "Many criticise him for his lifestyle off the pitch and believe he sets a bad example, the writer says. Romario had been notorious for his lush life, of being fond of pretty girls and loving the nightlife. But his public image has changed a great deal recently, especially since he became the father of a girl with Down's Syndrome. His public displays of tenderness for his child and his engagement in the cause has led parents of children with special needs to admire him. The tears that Romario shed in his last appearance with Brazil's national squad also made Brazilians realise that he was not only a bon vivant, but a devoted athlete. Many also look back into 1994. That year, thanks mainly to Romario, Brazil won a World Cup after a 24-year gap. Jose Geraldo Couto, who is also a leading film critic, says that the controversy surrounding Romario's 1000 goals is a bit like the famous quote from the western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance: "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." "A great deal of football history is based on myth and cannot rely solemnly on facts and figures," the critic says. "The exact number is less relevant than the fact that Romario always dreamed of scoring 1,000 goals".

Would rather him up front with Martins than Sib..

Dyer - "I wasted my talent and took football for granted"
Scottish Mag replied to Scottish Mag's topic in Newcastle Forum
Nicely pre-empted there. Doesn't mean that people being sceptical about that article are wrong though. In the face of the evidence I would say so, yeah. If not wrong then unnecessarily sceptical. He's worked fucking hard to sort out his injury problems, and he's one of the few players who's looked arsed on the pitch this season. Will he ever get a break from the "haters" or does he need to turn into Pele first? He doesn't need a break from people like me, it's not like I've ever booed him or sent him hate mail. As the article says though, he admits he has pissed his career away. Well that's nice, unfortunately he damaged the club I support in the process, am I supposed to shake his hand? He's played a bit better this season since coming back true, but if I am guilty of not giving him a break then I suspect ou are guilty of exaggerating his worth. For the money he's on, we should have a player like Lampard, but instead we get Dyer. It's not his fault he's overpaid of course but consider the contrast between him and Lampard since their infamous sex video. Dyer only has himself to blame and I'm not surprised many people feel short-changed. You can't blame the lad for not being as good as Lampard. Just because they came into contact with one another's jizz it doesn't mean they have to share footballing skills too. What did he do to damage the club btw? If you say pissed in the street I'm gonna hit you. You better make sure J69s not about or you'll be getting pointed out to the police..
