Worth a swap with Faye though?
-
Skysports.com understands that Newcastle have entered the race to land Portsmouth's Matthew Taylor, in a deal that could involve Amdy Faye. Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has conceded that Taylor could be reluctantly sacrificed in order to finance other deals, in a statement that has put a host of other Premiership clubs on red alert. The talented left sider, who can operate in defence or midfield, has already attracted a firm bid from Fulham for his services but the West London outfit face competition from several other clubs. It would now appear that Newcastle boss Graeme Souness could be ready to rekindle a long-term interest in Taylor, an admiration he has held since his time at the helm at Blackburn. Souness tried to lure Taylor to Ewood Park during his spell in the North West and it seems likely he will be in the running to take the player to St James' Park this time. If Newcastle do enter the competition to sign Taylor then it is understood that Faye could be used in a swap deal, with the Senegalese international already familiar with the South Coast having been signed by Souness from Portsmouth. Redknapp is well aware of the midfielder's combative qualities during his own time at Portsmouth and he remains an admirer of the 28-year-old.

NEWCASTLE boss Graeme Souness is making a £6million move to bring Nicolas Anelka back to the Premiership - at the second attempt. Souness has been given the green light to try to do a deal with Turkish side Fenerbahce for the French star after he revealed he wanted to join the Toon. The under-fire Newcastle chief hopes that his money men will finance the move after being tipped off that Anelka could go for around £6m with the Geordies offering a play-now-pay-later scheme. Newcastle offered £9m for Anelka just four months ago when they were worried that Michael Owen would choose Liverpool ahead of them, but that bid was rejected. Souness would have to take Anelka on loan or offer staged payments because the coffers are almost empty after some heavy spending. Chairman Freddy Shepherd has not given Souness any money during this transfer window while results are poor, but Newcastle know that they must find a long-term replacement for Alan Shearer. Owen, who is currently out with a broken foot, has filled one jersey but not Shearer's and the veteran striker still plans to go at the end of the season. The Toon do not want to miss out on Anelka and Everton have been pushing hard for him - with offers to buy or take on loan. Souness would be delighted to sign Anelka and pair him with Shearer now while Owen recovers from his broken foot. It could transform his season and possibly save his job. For Newcastle the deal would also be proof that they are willing to end big on the right players. It would be a massive gamble by Souness to risk saving Toon's season on a player with such a controversial history. After a successful spell with Arsenal, the Frenchman has spent time with Real Madrid, PSG, Liverpool, Manchester City and Fenerbahce but has always failed to settle. LIFE AND CRIMES Feb 1997: Joins Arsenal for £500,000 and wins the Double. August 1999: Refuses to train with the Gunners and demands move to Lazio or Real Madrid. Eventually sold to Real for £23m. March 2000: Suspended by Real for 45 days after refusing to train. July 2000: Moves to Paris Saint-Germain. December 2001: Falls out with PSG and is loaned to Liverpool. June 2002: Liverpool refuse to sign Anelka who joins Manchester City for £13m. November 2002: Refuses to link up with French national squad. January 2003: Retires from international football. December 2004: Tells City fans he wants to move to a "big club". January 2005: Joins Turkish side Fenerbahce in a £7m deal. May 2005: Claims he wants to move back to Liverpool after growing unhappy in Turkey.

Is that the best you can do? Weak tbh. alex, if you ever reach the heights of National Government and for some reason get asked to go on Question Time, your level of banter HAS to improve on the "takes one to know one" or "know you are said you are" type of response. If however you're happy to be the captain of this forum as a lifetime achievement, carry on with your rapier wit. Jan 16 2006 By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle Fulham were so bad at Craven Cottage on Saturday it is easy to see how they have been bracketed in the teams who could be relegated at the end of the season. So after their deserved victory, just where does this leave Newcastle United after their eighth defeat out of 12 matches away from St James' Park? It hardly bears thinking about as Everton, another team whose supporters have been worried about relegation, have joined United on 26 points. Of those 12 matches away from home, United have now failed to score in nine of them. And it wasn't until youngsters Michael Chopra and Alan O'Brien came on and livened things up in the last 15 minutes that Graeme Souness' side looked remotely like changing this. For the life of me, I could not understand why United did not put Fulham under more pressure. Their defence was all over the place to such an extent that debutant keeper Antti Niemi was a bundle of nerves. And if Alain Goma, who was on the bench, is not considered better than the plodding Ian Pearce then the former United central defender should gather up the millions pounds he has made in England and head back home to France. The long-suffering United supporters must have wished another Frenchman, Steed Malbranque, had already gone home, as it was his goal and performance which won the game for Fulham after his 62nd-minute entrance. The supporters must have known it was curtains, as they have never seen their side come back to win a Premiership match under Souness after going behind, although to be fair they did have a late flurry thanks to Chopra, O'Brien and Lee Bowyer. Yet the United fans keep turning up in their numbers, and on Saturday their support was absolutely magnificent again. Certainly they could be excused from chanting rather sarcastically: "If it wasn't for the injuries we'd be top". There were other chants from some of them after the game which Souness will not have liked, but if he is honest with himself, the manager will know that this was yet another passionless and poor performance from his side. Fulham weren't much better, and only that little flurry at the end probably saved this game from being the worst Premiership match United have been involved in for some time. Lee Clark was involved in almost everything United did, which was not a lot, and Peter Ramage did well enough in his first start at centre-half. After that, Souness will not have learned anything new. What is not new this season is Shay Given saving United from a much heavier defeat time after time. It's easy to say that's what the Irishman is paid to do, but I keep wondering just how much more the United keeper can take. Come to think of it, how much more can the travelling Toon Army take? Verdict: Terrible match. Terrible performance. Terrible result.
