  1. Birmingham's on-loan striker Mauro Zarate is having discussions with Portsmouth over a possible move to Fratton Park, BBC Sport understands. However, the FA Cup winners have yet to agree a fee with the 21-year-old's parent club, Al-Saad of Qatar. Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is believed to be "very keen" to land Zarate who scored four goals for relegated Blues. The Argentine, who joined on loan in January until the end of the season, scored four goals for relegated Blues. Last week, Birmingham boss Alex McLeish paid tribute to the striker. "Mauro's going to be an attractive proposition to Premier League clubs, in fact I know he is," he told the Birmingham Mail. "I would like to thank him for his spell here, and he made an impact, which was never going to be easy. "It was a little bit of a risk bringing him in from a league where you can get away with things, be lazy and still look like a world class star, coming into the hurly-burly of the Premier League. "So I applaud his spirit, his heart and he will be a good asset to one of the big clubs, if not here then abroad."

  3. I would hope so but no probably not however...what is your point? It's obvious what my point is as the lad pointed out. Hooliganism is ok in my view when the hooligans are meeting other hooligans. They want to fight, so do the other lot, fuckin let them get on with it. What a lot of people don't understand is that there is an unwritten rule almost that a firm/mob will not touch scarfers. The problems come when ordinary people become caught up in it. The Rangers fans were just wanks, they weren't looking for another mob, clearly they were just pissed and making a cunt of themselves, it seems to me this is a very Scottish thing. Sounds like some of the posters on here tbh....

  5. Miguel Veloso has hinted he could be ready to a summer move to England. The Sporting Lisbon star was speaking after he helped his club claim the Portguese Cup with victory over league champions Porto on Sunday. Manchester United have long been linked with the versatile midfielder, whilst Newcastle and Arsenal are also said to be interested. Now the 21-year-old has again suggested he could move to England but would not talk about any possible destination. "I do not know if this was my last game [for Sporting]," he told reporters afterwards. "England may be a good destination but I do not know anything about the offers." Sporting have always said they may allow Veloso to leave this summer - but only if their valuation of the Portuguese international is met.
  6. Damien Duff will leave Newcastle this summer, with Portsmouth, Spurs and Blackburn all interested in signing the 29-year-old left winger. Duff has flopped since moving to St James' Park from Chelsea two years ago for £5million. His time in the north east has been blighted by injury and poor form and he has now told friends that he will move this summer after being informed he was not going to be a regular in Kevin Keegan's team next summer. Duff has already put his house up for sale and ideally wants to move back to the capital. Newcastle failed in a move for Luka Modric, who they saw as a natural replacement and have now turned their sights to Galtasaray's Arda Turan and Stuttgart's Mario Gomez. Both players have been watched in recent weeks, although Kevin Keegan will face fierce competition in attempting to sign either player. Turan, a natural left winger, is coveted by a host of clubs, including Barcelona, AC Milan and Valencia, whilst Gomez, who scored at the weekend, has attracted interest from some of Europe's top clubs. Keegan confirmed he will not stand in the way of player's like Duff, who see their future away from Newcastle. “You might find a player not happy here, and he'll probably be a player not in the side,” he said. “They might not enjoy being out of the team. Any player here can always come and see me. If they tell me why they are unhappy maybe we can do something about it.”
  7. NEWCASTLE United took a spot of French leave over the weekend as they continue to scour Europe in their bid to bring the best young talent to St James’s Park. Director of Football Dennis Wise and assistant manager Chris Hughton were in France taking in Metz’s game with Le Mans. There were several top young stars on view, but I am told the player United were watching did not have a particularly good game and that they will have to go back for another look. Wise, vice-president Tony Jimenez and chief scout Jeff Vetere have not been letting the grass grow under their feet while Kevin Keegan, Chris Hughton, Steve Round and Terry McDermott have been keeping the club in the Premier League. They have run the rule over Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano of Seville – a club with whom Jimenez is well connected. But another well-connected club, Real Madrid, are tipped to snatch the man dubbed the bad boy of Brazilian football. The Chronicle revealed on March 8 that St Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis had been watched on a couple of occasions by United’s scouting team and last weekend Keegan went to France to have a look himself. But Gomis’ price will have gone up over this weekend after he was selected for the first time for the full French squad for their pre-Euro finals training camp – in preference to the 30-year-old Juventus striker David Trezeguet. Meanwhile, Keegan will need all his persuasive powers if he is going to convince United’s top brass that one of his main targets, Richard Dunne, should find a peg in the St James’s Park dressing room. The word I am hearing is that at 28, the Manchester City player is too old and, bearing in mind he will want a three-year £60,000-a-week contract, Keegan must feel his chances of landing the central defender are not good. But Wise is keen on Bournemouth’s young Welsh Under-21 striker Sam Vokes, and would have already done a deal had not the south coast club gone into administration. Now Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is hoping to step in and snatch Vokes from under the noses of United.
  8. NEWCASTLE United are trying to move quickly in their efforts to land Galatasaray’s highly-rated midfielder Arda Turan and hope to tie up an £8m deal before the start of the European Championships next month. Arda, 21, an attacking midfielder who can play wide on the left or in a more central role behind the strikers, is one of the hottest young talents in European football and will be a key figure in Turkey’s Euro 2008 campaign. United manager Kevin Keegan is on the look-out for a creative midfielder with pace and, having missed out on Luka Modric when the Croatian playmaker decided to join Tottenham Hotspur last month because of their presence in next season’s Uefa Cup, Arda is seen as an ideal alternative. Both Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez have been to watch him play this year and Keegan has also given the green light to a deal following discussions last week. Arda has been tracked by a host of European clubs, including Barcelona, Fiorentina, Villarreal and AC Milan, while Middlesbrough have also been linked with making a bid. With so much interest, Galatasaray officials are keen to wait until after the European Championships to sell their star player, who has won 16 senior caps and scored 14 goals in 72 Turkish top-flight appearances, in the hope that an impressive tournament will start a bidding war and push his price up. However, the matter could be further complicated by Galatasaray’s long-standing desire to take Emre back to the club where he began his career and they could be persuaded to do business now if the former Inter Milan player goes in the opposite direction. Keegan has repeatedly insisted he does not want to lose Emre and Newcastle hope that his presence on Tyneside will actually help persuade Arda to move to St James’s Park. Galatasaray have been linked with a move for their former player every summer since he came to England, but no bid has ever materialised and, although Emre’s season was wrecked by a persistent calf problem, he is understood to be happy at Newcastle and with Keegan as his manager. “I keep saying that he’s not unsettled,” said Keegan. “A lot of people say he has been, but I don’t see an unsettled player here. I see a player who is obviously very keen to play in the Euro 2008, which he will for Turkey. It will be good for Emre to get games.” Galatasaray hope to raise at least £11m from Arda’s sale, but Newcastle have not agreed to that amount at this stage. That, though, could change if there is a chance they can complete the move before the end of the month. The Turkish club have debts estimated at around £45m and know cashing in on their best young player is the best way to reduce that figure. Should he become Keegan’s first signing of the summer in the next few days, Damien Duff is likely to have played his last game for the club. The Republic of Ireland international insisted last week he is happy at Newcastle and keen to make up for two injury-ravaged seasons, but he is not part of Keegan’s first team plans and has attracted the interest of Portsmouth and former club Blackburn Rovers. Meanwhile, former Newcastle right-back Stephen Carr is on the verge of moving to the Midlands with Birmingham City and Aston Villa both interested in signing him following his release by United last week.
  9. TRANSFER RUMOURS Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will swoop for Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz if Emmanuel Adebayor leaves to join Barcelona. (The Times) Liverpool could turn their attention to Stewart Downing if their proposed move for Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry falls through. Reds boss Rafael Benitez is prepared to pay £12m for the Middlesbrough winger. (Daily Telegraph) Bordeaux midfielder Alou Diarra, who was at Liverpool as a youngster, is an £8m target for Everton. (Daily Mirror) Barcelona have agreed a £6m fee with Manchester United for 21-year-old defender Gerard Pique, who arrived at Old Trafford from the Catalan club in 2004. (Daily Mail) Manchester United striker Louis Saha has admitted Wednesday's Champions League final could be his last game for the club. (Daily Telegraph) Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has urged Barcelona team-mate Samuel Eto'o to quit the Spanish giants. (Daily Telegraph) Henry himself has been offered £5.2m a year by Major League Soccer newcomers Seattle Sounders to join Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham in the United States. (The Independent) Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson could make his loan move to Aston Villa permanent in a £6m deal. (Daily Mirror) Harry Kewell is also on his way out of Anfield, with Portsmouth prepared to give the midfielder a £50,000-a-week deal. (Daily Mirror) If Harry Redknapp does sign Kewell, Nico Kranjcar will be allowed to join Arsenal for £10m. (Daily Mirror) Arsenal have also been heavily linked with a move for Marseille playmaker Samir Nasri, who has been labelled the next Zidane. (Various) Lille midfielder Jean II Makoun and St Etienne right-back Mouhamadou Dabo are also in Arsene Wenger's sights. (The Independent) Everton midfielder Lee Carsley has been offered a two-year deal to join Birmingham. (Daily Mirror) West Brom midfielder Zoltan Gera has received an offer to join Benfica. (The Times) QPR want to sign West Brom striker Kevin Phillips and Wolves forward Freddy Eastwood. (Daily Mirror) Derby boss Paul Jewell has put his whole squad up for sale following the club's relegation to the Championship. (Daily Record) Fulham captain Brian McBride, whose contract expires this summer, is wanted by MLS sides Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire. (The Times) OTHER GOSSIP Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini claims he will take over from Avram Grant at Chelsea, even if the Stamford Bridge outfit win the Champions League final on Wednesday. (Daily Mirror) Grant has told friends he will walk away from Chelsea if his side beat Manchester United in Moscow. (Various) Steve McClaren is mulling over an offer to become manager of Dutch side FC Twente. (Various) AND FINALLY England midfielder David Beckham could be set to scale Mount Kilimanjaro after been asked by U2 frontman Bono to help raise funds for children's charity Unicef. (The Sun)
  10. NEWCASTLE are set to beat Middlesbrough to the signing of Turkish winger Arda Turan as a replacement for Damien Duff. And there is every chance that Emre will also leave United — for Galatasaray — as a big-money move for Turan, pictured left, materialises. The likely arrival of Turan signals the end of Duff’s days at Newcastle, with the Irishman having already put his lavish Northumberland house up for sale after being told he is not part of United’s first-team plans. And while Duff contemplates interest from Portsmouth and former club Blackburn, Boro could console themselves by landing United’s James Milner. Following widespread talk in Turkey of a big-money Magpies move for Turan, his agent last night confirmed that the two-footed 21-year-old may be on the move. And while the same agent, Ahmet Bulut, insisted Emre, pictured right, is happy to stay at Newcastle, he has held talks with Galatasaray last week over their former midfielder. On Turan, who already boasts 16 international caps and is tipped to star at Euro 2008, Bulut said: “One club is talking to Galatasaray and asking them to name their price. “If Galatasaray’s request is met, the transfer can happen.” That club is understood to be Newcastle, although Boro have also made enquiries about Turan on the recommendation of their Turkish striker Tuncay. The Teessiders, as revealed by the Sunday Sun in March, are ready to pounce for Milner, who had little chance to impress Kevin Keegan before the end of the season because of injury. Meanwhile, Newcastle have also made contact with the agent of Mauro Zarate, the Argentine striker recently on loan at Birmingham.
  11. NEWCASTLE United midfielder Geremi is banking on Kevin Keegan using his successful 4-3-3 formation next season. There is no doubt that United’s fortunes took a change for the better once Keegan implemented the formation in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham City at St Andrews in the middle of March – a game which sparked a seven-match unbeaten run and killed off all fears of relegation. And undoubtedly Geremi, who had previously been used in a more central midfield role, was a key man in the 4-3-3 line-up. Obviously, a lot will depend on just who Keegan brings into the club as to what formations the United boss uses next season, although in a perfect world he would like to be flexible. But this has not stopped Geremi from looking ahead and beyond his four World Cup qualifiers with Cameroon to his life at St James’s Park next season and hoping he is operating down the right with the overlapping Habib Beye. Geremi is currently on international duty after starring for Cameroon in the African Nations Cup after helping his country to the final, where they were beaten by Egypt. And as he prepared for the qualifier at home to Cape Verde a fortnight today, he told me: “I enjoyed my football with Newcastle at the end of the season, especially because of the way the team played. We had a very bad period, but we stuck together, and continued to work. “The manager had a big impact on us, and we’ve had good results. “I know he had been following the African Nations Cup, so he knew that I can play wide in midfield, or right-back. “It is the same role, and for me it’s easier, as I know how to play right-back, and I have a good understanding with Habib Beye. “We played with three in midfield, which has a good shape, and we had good organisation. “We were very confident at the end of the season and there is no reason why we should not carry this into next season.” Geremi missed the last game of the season on compassionate grounds after his elder sister died of leukaemia.
  12. NOBBY SOLANO is backing Kevin Keegan to do what the Newcastle United manager does not believe he can – and get the club back into the Champions League. Keegan thinks the best United can hope for in the next couple of years is to battle it out with the clubs outside the recognised top four of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. But after watching from afar, the little Peruvian, who says his son is a Geordie boy after his time at St James’s Park, thinks Keegan may be under-selling himself. The 33-year-old midfielder, who cost United £2.76m when Kenny Dalglish bought him from Boca Juniors in 1998, told me today: “Of all the memories I have of Newcastle United none are better than the Champions League, and I do not see why my old club should not get back into it under Kevin Keegan. “Obviously, I wasn’t around when he was at St James’s Park as a manager the first time and I don't really know him. “But when I was on the bench against Newcastle at Upton Park at the end of the season I watched him closely, especially when West Ham were two goals up. “He clearly still had faith in his team and, just as important, his players all had faith in him. “To tell the truth, I cannot remember many teams in the Premier League coming back after being two goals down. “But Newcastle did that day, and in the end they could even have won it and a lot of it was down to the impact Kevin Keegan had on them.” Solano, of course, had plenty of good days not only in a black-and-white shirt but also in the white shirt of his country. He has a winning goal to his name for Peru against Brazil. And he will always have a place in United’s folklore after knocking in a match-winning penalty against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Solano also sent Arsenal packing in Graeme Souness’ time as manager of United and who can forget his superb goal against 1860 Munich in the Olympic Stadium in the InterToto Cup in the summer of 2001? But it is Europe’s top competition Nobby keeps coming back to, adding: “I have had a good career and one of the highlights has to be that season five years ago under Sir Bobby Robson. ”I was on the bench when Craig Bellamy almost beat Feyenoord on his own to take us through to the next stage, and I played in the San Siro when we came away disappointed at just achieving a 2-2 draw with Inter Milan on their own ground. “I am a West Ham player now and my ambitions are all with them, but I would love to see my old team back in the Champions League. “If there is one man who can take them there, that man is Kevin Keegan, although it is going to be very difficult for anyone to break the current top-four monopoly.” Solano only appeared for a couple of minutes as a substitute against United at the end of the season – still enough for him to receive a tremendous reception from the Toon Army. A couple of weeks later he signed his West Ham season off with a goal in the 2-2 draw with another of his former clubs Aston Villa. Solano will be back at Upton Park next season but eventually he feels that he will return to Peru where he is still a national hero. However, he insists: “Wherever I am in the world I will always have a place for Newcastle in my heart.”
  13. MIDDLESBROUGH are in no mood to sell unsettled midfielder Gary O'Neil on the cheap, but Newcastle's James Milner has emerged as a strong candidate to replace the former Portsmouth man. Boro boss Gareth Southgate is a long-standing admirer of Milner and views him as a suitable alternative to O'Neil on the right wing if the latter's situation fails to improve. Southgate intends to recruit hungry, promising midfielders this summer and if O'Neil departs, the boss would not be prepared to wave his plans. Milner, 22, fits the bill. Newcastle are likely to fend off any bid for the England Under-21 international from Teesside, but Southgate has the Magpies man high on his wanted list. "We have to start looking to bring in some young players we can develop," said Southgate, hinting at Milner, who has not figured for Kevin Keegan's side since the defeat to Liverpool in March. "We never seem to be in that position as a club to be able to develop from within, but we have never invested in young players who you take a chance on and hope will come through." In football terms, O'Neil is satisfied with life at the Riverside Stadium, although on a personal level, with his family in mind, he would prefer to return south. Southgate will be doing everything he can to persuade O'Neil that his future remains in the North-East after proving himself in the first half of the season to be a viable solution to a right-side problem that has dogged the club for the last few years. The Middlesbrough manager would be the first to admit that his off-the-field dissatisfaction has had a negative impact on O'Neil's performances since the turn of the year. That's why Southgate would listen to offers for O'Neil if it becomes clear by the time pre-season training starts in July that the player's desire is still to move on. "My ideal (with O'Neil) is that we get everything settled and he is with us because he can improve. "We definitely want to keep him," said Southgate. While Milner and Chelsea's Steve Sidwell are two players very much in his plans, Southgate has discounted the suggestion that he is interested in Sheffield United's versatile midfielder Michael Tonge. Tonge, 25, has previously attracted interest from Liverpool and Tottenham, but Southgate will not be making a move. "Even he is more of an experienced player," said the Middlesbrough boss. "He is a good player but I am thinking even younger than that. Players with all the time ahead of them. "We also know that maybe in the Academy we have a crop that has come through together, though maybe only one or two currently might step up " That is the age group we're looking at. "We have Tom Craddock as the only young striker at the club now since Ben Hutchinson went to Celtic. Jonathan Franks and Nathan Porritt are more wide players, so there is a role there for any bright young striker." South Korea striker Dong-Gook Lee is in negotiations with five Japanese teams after being released. The 29-year-old left the Riverside on Tuesday after failing to hold down a regular first-team place following his move to England in January last year. "We cannot disclose all the teams under negotiation, but we plan to make our choice within the next three months,'' said Lee's agent Kim Ki-Hoon.
  14. Tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra has put Manchester City’s entire squad up for sale in the latest twist to his bizarre behaviour. Thai billionaire Shinawatra, who is already set to sack manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, is apparently so disgusted with the team’s performances in the second half of the season that he wants a massive clear-out, including young stars such as Micah Richards, Michael Johnson and Joe Hart. The news of the impending fire sale throws City even deeper into turmoil and will further antagonise fans, who staged a mass demonstration against Shinawatra last week. They are threatening to withhold money for season tickets until it becomes clear who the manager will be next season and what players will be on the pitch. It also underlines the belief of many City insiders that Shinawatra does not understand football. City’s owner, it is understood, has written a letter to each member of the team conveying his feelings. He has put all contract talks on hold and wants to start next season from scratch with a new manager and new players. All this has prompted deputy chairman John Wardle, who is distraught at the crisis, to apologise to the players for selling the club to Shinawatra. But the damage has been done and many players will be delighted to jump ship and relaunch their careers at a club with a less volatile owner. Skipper Richard Dunne is expected to join Newcastle for £5million. The poor treatment of Eriksson was the final straw for Dunne, City’s Player of the Season. Richards is also unhappy. He signed a new four-year contract in February because he was sure the club were going in the right direction. But Manchester United and Chelsea have now been alerted. Johnson is a target for Liverpool, and goalkeeper Hart is being pursued by Tottenham, who also covet Martin Petrov, City’s Bulgarian winger. Sunderland have been eyeing Stephen Ireland and there would be no shortage of bids for Elano. Morale was so low that City lost Sunday’s final league game 8-1 against Middlesbrough. http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/44612/Firing-squad
