You have to wonder what there is to be gained by manned space exploration tbh compared to other ways in which resources could be used.

The distances seem so vast it seems like a waste of effort to me. I doubt there's much we can do to prevent something like that and we are nowhere near sending manned spacecraft to the outer reaches of the Solar System, let alone to another one. Who knows though?

Yeah I know. But the distances are unbelievably huge. And how do you go about transporting an ever growing population etc. so many light years. I reckon diverting the asteroid would be easier.

And we haven't been visited imo. I reckon we'd have been affected more than the odd mutilated cow.

Stuff within our solar system is (as I mentioned, Mars and such) easily conquerable with what we got, it's just money and political will that will never be there.

 

Stuff our side our solar system might be possible with what we got, but it would be the ultimate form of one way trip and be so expensive that I can't see it happening unless the Earth is to be wiped out soon or something.

 

 

And yeah that's probably the best argument against UFO (as aliens anyway) if you've either got the technology to cross vast differences quickly (or even very slowly frankly) you're probably going to want to do more than mutilated a few cows and sexually abuse drunk Americans.

Iirc travelling huge distances / achieving greater speeds is achieved by using the gravities of planetary bodies as a 'slingshot'. I'm pretty sure that's how Voyager, Voyager II etc. travelled as far and as fast as they did. The Planets was a quality doc series come to think of it.
