Houllier

Aulas said last Sunday in remarks reported by L'Equipe: "A good president must have foresight.

"I don't envisage the departure of Gerard Houllier but I have planned ahead with the board and I will not be deprived."

Planning.

Seemed to be the fans number one choice in the polls, at least the one I recall on here.

I'd have been far happier with him over Sam, obviously wasn't approached though.

Could do a decent job there. I know he ran out of steam towards the end at Liverpool, and his failure in the league and Champions League(i.e. not winning either) cost him his job. Won a good deal of trophys though and has carried on turning Lyon into a monster in the French League.

I've always thought that the club's parochialism and obsession with British managers was infuriating, but I'm glad we got Allardyce and not Houllier. Houllier is a very good manager, but I don't think he'd be right for us, at least as long as Shepherd is still in charge. Allardyce is exactly what we need now, a proven (well, sort of) manager on the up who will be given time to turn things around. Houllier, because he's foreign and because of what he achieved at Liverpool, would be under far more pressure right from day one.

To be fair I think Jacques Santini did the "turning", Le Guen and Houllier did a good job of keeping the ball rolling.

100% correct, that's why I said "carried on".
