Alan Smith Debate

debate?

Well in my eyes theres no debate! He is a good player and should not be subjected to the shit some do on here!

As a manc what was your impression of him? Scored a few beltin goals for yas!

:D

He's playing out of position, which is Allardyce's fault. Unfortunately, he seems to have been bought because he's 'versatile'. When I say that I mean that SAF tried him there once or twice so that means he must be. That's bollocks, he always looks like a striker playing in midfield and the fact he's almost got more cards to his name than Hallmark is indicative of that.

When he plays upfront he always looks busy, quite Sheareresque in a way barring his finishing. Problem is Viduka, Owen and Martins are all going to be ahead of him in the pecking order so he'll rarely get a run out there.

Shame because i think you play, smith and oba or smith and owen you'd get a good partnership. Instead we get to watch an imobile fat useless ozzie instead!! <_<

So basically you think Smith should be first choice striker?

Viduka may be useless but he actually puts the ball in the net. Something Smith hasn't done in the PL for over 2 years is it now? To be fair on the lad he was out injured for one of those years, but regardless, his record shows that he is never going to be a regular goal-scorer

An average striker when played alongside a mobile striker, at best. Played anywhere else and he's total foof flaps.

Some decent touches when he's up front, but that commitment you laud is more often an hindrance than anything else.

oh and Sammy...

for who? <_<

The rags were happy to be shut of him tbh mate (not that that's really any barometer as their second string players can still represent an improvement for us at the moment). Basically they admired his workrate but were more than happy to let us take him off their hands. He's a good lad for the record (seen him out and about Mcr and theirs no twatfulness at all, just a down to earth bloke) but unfortunately that, even when coupled with his workrate, doesn't warrant a place in the starting eleven.

For shame :D

Horrific.

I'd rather have Enrique as captain - lack of English notwithstanding - than this hotheaded Yorkshire-pud-eating bastard. In most of his games it's as though we've been playing with ten men and some of the tackles he missed v. Stoke for example were truly shocking. Exactly what we don't need is another Butt with far less skill, far less guile, and far less self-control.

Why has Sam picked two sad wallies as captain? The former I'll write off as an honest mistake. The latter...well, I don't think there's any coincidence that our new captain has his name on wor Ashley's replica.

Under 1 in 4 is dismal for a player who has spent several seasons for teams at the top end of the league.

Smith is a mediocre backup striker and an abomination in midfield. He doesn't know how to play there and had none of the attributes to do a good job. He should be on the bench as the lesser of our three current strikers and should be nowhere near the armband.

What he said.

Tries hard, works hard, achieves absolutely fuck all apart from conceding silly free-kicks and getting himself booked all the time. His scoring record is a joke even when you consider that he has played in midfield quite a lot. But hey, he always gives 100 percent and gets stuck in, so he will always be good enough for some people.

There's more to his game than that mate. He links midfield and attack well when he plays upfront and his workrate there shouldn't be underestimated imo. I did say when he signed though that he was probably (or should be) 4th choice striker, which makes him pretty expensive. Agree about him in midfield.

It's not his fault he's being played in midfield, I know that. And to be fair to him, he seems like a top professional in that he's never once complained about not being played up front.

I sense you are holding back here. Why not dispense with the diplomacy and tell us what you REALLY think :D

Jack of all trades, master of none.

I think that's wrong tbh. Allardyce tries to make out he's versatile but he isn't. He's woeful in midfield.
