I'd be canny gutted if we signed someone like Bullard tbh. Hoping for better than that.

If he was signed as one of the promised 'quality' players yes, but as a squad player he would be a huge step up from the likes of Emre imho. I think having someone like Bullard is also pretty good for team spirit.

i think bullard would be a canny signing. he's probably the best standard english player we're going to attract these days. i'd take him over a dodgy johnny foreigner sniffing a final pay day. agree it would be disappointing if he was the best of our summer buys but he'd certainly be an improvement on the likes of smith, geremi and barton in midfield.

Don't think he's any better than Barton like. And he's about 30.

i'd disagree there. i think barton is a very average - he's slow and doesn't score goals.

Not a massive fan of Barton. I just think he's a better player than he's looked here. He's probably scored about as many goals as Bullard I'd guess despite being signinificantly younger than him. And Bullard's not particularly pacey either.

Bullard is hardly a prolific goalscorer as well. People are overstating the need of midfielders scoring goals anyway. There are very few Ballacks, Lampards and Scholes around...

Barton > Bullard . Not by much, but I'd rather him than Bullard.

We need another commanding CB; a LB to give Enrique some competition; a young RB to shadow Beye; An out and out striker with pace, strength, eye for goal; a young dedicated DMC to shadow/replace Butt; some pace/trickery on the wings and another creative attacking player - i'd love Arshavin here.

I'm not convinced by this obsession with specialist defensive midfielders. Unless you're playing a 4-5-1 or a similar formation I think an all-round central midfielder (or rather two of them) is a much more important type of player to have.

I'd take Bullard over Emre every day of the week. Like said, he's great for team spirit, has looked fairly lively whenever I've seen him and he's got a canny free kick on him. Emre has none of this. As far as a straight replacement goes, Bullard for Emre is a good bit of business and it's far more realistic than players like Van Der Vaart and Diego that have been thrown around on here.

For the record, I do think we'll sign someone that's on the highly sought-after list. I'd lodge a cheeky bid for Zarate as well but not for the prices named. £10-15 million is mental.

Transfer fees quoted in English tabloids are always mental and probably even make foreign clubs believe they can demand those prices.

A couple of weeks Deco was rated to be worth 15m quid in the English press, but only 8m Euro (!) in Germany when linked with Bayern.
