Got this from somewhere else, but apparently it's about to become very easy to hack people's Gmail accounts, and if you have any important info on there like bank details or any sort of password emails, you probably want to sort it out.

Basically log in, go to settings, and click the "always use https" option.

I'm no computer expert btw, so this could all be a bit of unnecessary scare mongering but for the sake of two clicks of a mouse I'm not really arsed.

Gmail is great, much better than hotmail, yahoo etc etc, I've done it and I'm sure it will make it more secure but I'm not sure if this threat is anything to be worried about yet, will ask my old man later as he is a computer geek.

Hmm, sounds technical.

Gmail is canny shit like. I only use mine to sign up for things which I know are going to send me a load of junk.

I don't like the gmail format, but I use it configured through outlook express. The main advantage of that is if you start getting spam mail again, you can just use a different gmail address in the same way. And of course, its backed up via gmails own net mail server.

I have heard when you sign up to GMail they keep your details and the details of the searches you make.

Thats a pretty bad invasion of privacy TBH. I dont want anyone to know how many times I do a google search for redtube.

does anyone like PP, Craig or Gol have any opinions on this ?

I think its only really an issue if you use unsecure wireless connections such as Starbucks and the like. If you're using it on a PC at home then I dont think its a problem. Setting SSL may slow down the running of gmail slightly due to encrypting and de-encrypting the data but if you've got anything newer than a 10 year old PC and some form of broadband then you've got nothing to lose by setting the SSL settings.

You can set use SSL on an ad-hoc basis by loading https://www.gmail.com rather than the http: URL.

Allegedly the SSL settings can cause problems on mobile devices though so be warned if you use your phone etc to view gmail.
