Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed Marlon Harewood is close to joining Newcastle on loan.

As revealed by skysports.com earlier this month, Newcastle have agreed a three-month loan deal with Villa to take Harewood to St James' Park.

O'Neill is happy to let Harewood go out on loan as he is currently fifth-choice striker at Villa Park behind Gabriel Agbonlahor, John Carew,Emile Heskey and Nathan Delfouneso.

Former West Ham man Harewood has just returned from injury and O'Neill feels he would benefit from more regular first-team football at Newcastle.

"Newcastle are still looking to do something in terms of Marlon," said O'Neill.

"I think they are waiting to hear whether they have permission from their owner to go and progress the move.

"I think the opportunity for him now coming back from injury, to get involved in a cause, would be very important and only a benefit for all of us.

"Marlon has been out since pre-season with injuries. He is fighting back, is feeling fine, trained for a few days on the trot.

"But people are pressing for places and at this moment we have competition up front. Delfouneso is going to be a really excellent player and he is hovering around in terms of being on the bench."

Marlon Harewood is set to complete a 93-day loan move to Newcastle on Friday after owner Mike Ashley agreed to pay the striker's £25,000 a week wages.

Magpies boss Chris Hughton has been chasing Aston Villa forward Harewood, 30, for weeks to bolster the Championship high fliers' attack.

And Newcastle have now got their man, with Harewood set to sign on Friday to enable him to play in the busy Christmas fixture list.

Ashley has pledged to pick up the hitman's large wage packet after Harewood returned to training last week following a foot injury sustained in pre-season.

But the St James' Park club have insisted on a clause that will see Harewood sent back to Villa should the injury flare up again as the cash-strapped club do not want to be saddled with his salary if he is not fully fit.

Harewood will now complete the paperwork on Friday ahead of his likely debut against Ipswich on Saturday.

And the move is a huge relief to Harewood, who has only started one Premier League match since a £4million move from West Ham in July 2007.

Harewood scored only seven goals for Villa and hopes to rediscover his touch for Newcastle, who will have an option to make the move permanent when the window opens in January.

If FMA has agreed to it then why wait until friday to sign him only allowing something to go wrong and us not having him in our squad for saturda?
