Can I be controversial? I've been to Liverpool quite a few times, and always liked it, even as an away fan.

Many thousands of people like going to defunct concentration camps in Poland too. Each to their own tbh.

It must be really irksome to you that though Hitler tried to bomb Liverpool out of existence , it rose up and overcame the damage he inflicted.

Not the most definitive but Trip Advisor not without merit either.

pmsl at that list. I'm embarrassed for you. Forgetting about what a hovel Liverpool is, Inverness!??!?! pmsl When I was there the main point of interest was a Ghwatt shop. Keep trying though. London third in Europe, as a city destination it is about 40% bigger than any other city on earth in terms of visitor numbers.

Missing the point as usual I see. It really doesn't matter what YOU think of a place at all, it's about the general consensus of the visiting public and for them Newcastle is below Liverpool.

I don't have to try, it's quite easy to put a bigot in his place. You constantly TRY to downgrade Liverpool but it always comes back in your face whether it's the city or the football team. You're completely obsessed with Liverpool, it's people and it's namesake football team, and very sadly for you, the city is far from a hovel, the people aren't all scumbags and it's namesake football team is one of the biggest clubs in the world, deal with it and move on ffs.

I don't have a problem with London having it's top place in the world, I love the place, lived there for a few years long ago and had a great time.

Complete bollocks, Newcastle regularly gets voted the best city North of London, as Chez link showed we get far, far, far more British visitors than Liverpool gets, and I don't NEED to try to downgrade Liverpool it speaks for itself pal. I don't really need to do anything apart from laugh at your links. Of course the people aren't all scumbags, even in places like Kabul and Kandahar you'll get thoroughly decent people there.

As far as I can see there's only one person who speaks complete bollocks on this board and Chez's post was for the North East you thickheaded nob. I'm more than happy to do the North East Vs The North West if you like, but whether visitors come from the UK or the rest of the world Liverpool still proves more popular on the majority of lists.

Speaking of scumbags, or complete nobs in this instance, I can't help but hope that you're not representitive of people from Newcastle.

Hitler tried to bomb Liverpool out of existence.

He wasn't all bad then.

It what comes of being an important place Doc, but yeah, some would agree with your comment.

De Jerrrrrmhans bombed are chippeeeeee.

Important place ;) so important it's the only city in Europe that has seen its' population half in 80 years. The most important thing it had was the passport office, but you can get them all over now.

You really are a dope aren't you? You know so much about Liverpool I'm surprised you haven't heard of Kirkby, Skelmersdale and Runcorn. All overspill towns where Scousers were moved to because the city was so crowded, plus the 11,000 homes lost during the war, meaning people had to be re-housed outside of the city boundary. In more recent years economic decline has certainly played it's part in population decline but Liverpool is on the up again, live with it.

Sorry, I should have qualified the important city with 'during WW2'. There are no important cities in the UK outside of London during peace time.

Would be interesting to see tourist figures that removed people only going to Liverpool because of the shit boy band - can't see any other reason to go there for foreigners.

So crowded??? It's easily the most derelict place I've ever been. Leeds, Edinburgh and Manchester are very important for the economy you absolute mong, most regional capitals are.

That's because there isn't one. WHY would you go there, like honest, question? Why would you go to Hull by the same measure?

PMSL at that. You were the one who brought 80 years in to the debate. I answered that, if you don't want to believe it then fine, I'd expect nothing less from a deluded bigot. Liverpool is far from derelict as the number of visitors will testify to.

The cities you mention are only important in as much as they get more crumbs from the capitals table than the rest, London is the only important UK city.

People come here for many reasons. It has some fantastic architecture, a world renowned maritime history, a vibrancy that has always been there, a long standing cultural legacy, a fantastic war history, we even have places linked to the American civil war. The most famous race in the world watched by 10 billion, plus two football teams who between them have made it in to the most successful footballing city in England with 27 league titles between them. One of the most well known water fronts in the world, you'd be surprised how many people come just because they like the water front.

There is so much more and that's without touching on the music, merseybeat and such.

As much, if not more, than most cities outside of London.

10 billion ;) So there's 4 billion more people watch it than who are actually alive, must be fuckin massive mate!

Aye due to a boat that sank. Why did it have Liverpool on the side when it was built in Belfast by the way?

10 billion? Fuck that's big.

You're right trophyshy, that's including all the repeats and podcasts etc... well if one of yours can exaggerate so much, thought I'd have a go myself.

Between 600 and 800 million live. 140 countries.

Not forgetting a maritime history built on the slave trade - interesting historically but being proud of where the city's wealth came from is a bit iffy.

Their maritime history stretches to more than just the Titanic Stevie. It was the wealthiest commercial port in the world. In the same way our industrial wealth was built up on shipbuilding, theirs was on maritime trade.

As for your query it was built in Belfast and sailed from Southampton but it was owned by the White Star Line who were based in Liverpool. It was up to them to register the vessel so that is why its home port was asssigned as Liverpool.
