50 partnership off 52 balls. Kiwis chasing the 5th wicket with five in the slip cordon has left gaps for root and stokes.

root has been our only consistent batter for ages. we can't keep relying on him to anchor the innings, coming in at 5.

I'm just following the score on cricinfo.

What's the pitch like? Is it swinging?

yup. looks a bowler's pitch, but that hasn't excused how any of england's batters have gifted their wicket away. only lyth got an absolute jaffa

Hit outside apparently. Seems to be taking turn too. I'd send Ali back down to the nets to resume his off-spin lessons.

Can we not just pick Root as our whole batting line up?

with 11 joe roots and 11 jack colbacks we may just stand a chance

50 a piece for Root and Stokes now at a really good rate. Just a shame it's not happening when we already have 150+ on the board before they came in!

Get KP to open alongside Cook. That'll learn them to learn to start trusting each other

I like the look of stokes. Good counter puncher in the middle order - looks a better all rounder than jordon in every discipline other than fielding.

nice to see some agressive batting for once, going along at a nice lick of about 4 an over. been a great day of test cricket all round so far.

Think Jordan is a 'steady Eddie' but Stokes is more of a match winner.

well played ben stokes. shame he fell 8 short of his ton but that innings has put england back in the contest from a bloody perilous position.

i hope buttler plays just as positively.

Aye it's been a really entertaining game so far from what looked like an absolute tragedy early doors.

Root and Stokes have saved us today so it's a shame for both of them not to get the centuries they deserved.

it's been a fine day's play. quite distracting from all the work i've got to do.

got to be happy with 302/6 after being 40 odd for 4 and with NZ putting us in to bat.

Just a shame Butler went last ball. Hopefully the bowlers will be up to scratch tomorrow.

That's a great effort from England's middle order. After choosing to bowl you've really got to bowl the opposition out on the first day to justify that decision. Definitely a win to England for day one. Shame for Root and Stokes that neither got a hundred they deserved to get there after coming in at 4/40.

 Fuck off marra bro.

First time 5 and 6 have both scored 90s in tests and only the fourth time in history that 5, 6 and 7 have all chalked up 50s
