  1. To be fair, it's easier to go all out attack against the likes of Man Utd and Arsenal, as they're not particularly defensive minded. Trying to do this against the likes of Stoke or QPR would be a different story as they'd sit 10 men behind the ball and wait for us to commit too many bodies forward. I know what you mean though, it's almost as if we find a special way to play against the big teams, then drop back down to normal against the smaller sides.
  2. Aye, totally agree. I know it's far from this simple, but Jonas gets injured and we concede 11 goals in 2 games.
  3. Simpson won't get a better salary elsewhere. He might get a signing on fee. He's one of the thickest footballers I have ever come across and I won't shed a tear when he's gone.
  4. That's the modern game - all about managing lactic acid. If he busts a gut to get back, he then needs another minute to recover. All top level players are specifically instructed to do exactly the same. The idea is that a midfielder will cover.
  5. Absolutely - Silkman is a nasty piece of work. I just mean that there's more to Robson than loveable old man.
  6. Bobby Robson was no saint when it came to agents mind. Wasn't he part of Stretford's dodgy company?
  7. I too can't see the sense in the subs, but Pardew isn't stupid and must have had his reasons.
  8. It's all about comparisons with Arsenal. Two sets of players pushing themselves to the limit. One who sat at home with their feet up on boxing day and the other who chased Man Utd on a soggy, heavy pitch. It's patently obvious that we were going to run out of steam before them. The level of their salaries is completely irrelevant.
  9. £500k transfer fee plus another million in wages.
  10. Ba has been absolutely brilliant for us, but we would be silly to try to compete with Chelsea on wages. He is already the highest paid player at the club - offering him the £4.5m per year BEFORE bonuses would open the floodgates for our other players to demand similar. We just can't afford that. However, his medical is far from a formality and it isn't completely impossible that any deal could fall through on that basis.
  11. There is never an occasion when that's acceptable. Kudos for the assist and goal, but like Cisse and Obertan, Marveaux offered no support to the back four whatsoever. Cisse in particular was constantly out of position (anyone would think he was a striker...) and Arsenal figured this out, completely exposing Simpson for the weak full back that he is.
  12. The tired legs will have had a huge impact. It's not about other teams, it's about Newcastle United and Arsenal - and they've got a clear advantage.
  13. I reckon there is more to the substitutions than meets the eye (ie injury / perceived tiredness). Tiote and Bigi's dominance in that deeper area meant Arsenal's attacking threat was limited to the wide areas. Once Bigi came off, that all changed.
  14. I remember a meal in there where the takeaway delivery drivers spent the entire night sat near the bar. It was a bit strange with them being there. Service and meal were good though. We cycle through a few. Used to go to the Romna quite regularly, but the last few have really made us bad. The Kismet, Shahenshah and Shikari have all been visited recently. Best takeaway is the Ellachi on Whitley Road (just near the Metro station). Consistently very good, and unbelievably cheap.
  15. Yep, it is. I did my back in hitting a pothole, flying down a hill at about 40mph. Possibly lucky not to come off, but my back seemed to take all of the impact and it's not been right since.
  16. Florence is class, as is Siena. Can't beat Edinburgh though. I love the place (probably marginally more than Newcastle).
  17. While Arsene Wenger struggled with his zip, Danny Simpson was pre-occupied with thoughts of undoing his.
  18. Pay Ba what he wants (nearly £5m a year) and Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Cisse, Coloccini etc will all come knocking on the door asking for a raise. You've then upped your wage bill by £30m a season and made the club unable to cover its costs. Only a club in the Champions League could afford to pay Ba £90k a week. As much as Ba is playing superbly, we're quite right to stand firm on this one.
  19. Tiote was superb in the first half. Perch and Coloccini barely needed to touch the ball - Tiote was always there ready to take the ball off him. The problem is that with Marveaux, Obertan and Cisse also in the midfield, he was fighting a one-man mission.
  20. Obertan and Marveaux canny going forward. But it's telling that we've lost Jonas from our midfield and conceded 11 goals.
  21. I love that you use three players who dis-prove your point to try to prove your point.
  22. If they score early - game over. If we manage to score before them it could be interesting.
