Ireland introduces new COVID restrictions Michael Martin, the PM of Ireland, has confirmed the country will reintroduce some coronavirus restrictions ahead of the Christmas period. New limits on the hospitality sector follow "very stark" advice from the chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan, he said. Under the latest rules, nightclubs will close until 9 January. Table service only will return to bars, with a maximum of six people per table permitted in restaurants. Mr Martin said the Omicron variant risks sparking a "very serious crisis" in Ireland. "The risks associated with proceeding into the Christmas period without some restrictions... is just too high," he added. "My message this evening is a difficult one... I understand and I share the disappointment and frustration this will cause for many of you." However, Mr Martin insisted: "This is not about going back to the days of lockdowns."

This is obviously why countries are concerned. Infections seem to be spread more rapidly than the Delta strain. Dr Michelle Groome of South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said there had been an “exponential increase” in infections over the past two weeks, from a weekly average of around 300 new cases per day to 1,000 last week, and most recently 3,500. On Wednesday, South Africa recorded 8,561 cases. A week earlier, the daily tally was 1,275. About a 7X increase in infections in a week. Obviously if this data now emerging is correct then its very concerning

This doesn't look good Heavily mutated Omicron is rapidly becoming the dominant variant of the Covid-19 in South Africa less than four weeks after it was first detected there.
