  1. Guess I just think our shite isn't as shite as the 3 other teams' shite. We've definitely been playing better football than Swansea, Norwich, mackems, Villa.
  2. Perez already has 5 this year. Not bad for a player that hasn't been in great form playing in a team that's struggled up front thus far. Even if Shelvey plays half as well as he did on his debut he'll make us a lot better as a unit. We've been crying out for a playmaking midfielder since Cabay left and while I don't think Shelvey is the player that Cabaye was, the difference he makes to us cannot be overstated. To get the magic 40pts we'd need 19pts from a possible 48pts, or 1.2pts per game. Mind you, I don't think 40 is actually the magic number any more. ≥40 points has only been the safety mark on three occasions in the past 20 seasons, so I'm not sure why people keep saying that's the target? So anyway, it's likely we'd need something like 36-37 points. Which is definitely doable. 36 is doable with less PpG than were on at the minute (0.94). and if we do revert to the mean, we'll end up with over 40pts anyway.
  3. I don't mind signing a striker if that striker was a prolific striker. If we'd signed Austin, I would have been fine with that, the man has regularly scored double figures in the English league. But we're chasing after Berahino who isn't prolific and has big question marks over his attitude. I wasn't saying don't sign a striker, I was saying sign the right striker, otherwise we've stymied the potential of Mitrovic to accommodate a knobhead. As it stands I've confidence in the squad we have now, to find the goals to get us out of the relegation zone. Gini, Perez, Sissoko, Mitrovic should all be able to chip in with enough goals to make a difference. That confidence would only have increased had we signed Austin, or convinced Lacazette.
  4. Course they won't, because it's safer to make vague statements like "we're in trouble" or "we're in a desperate situation" so when we survive or get out of it they don't look as stupid and when we go down they can glumly say "I told you so". It is a realistic possibility, as is survival. but if people were 50/50 wouldn't we see more people talking about survival than we do relegation? People are definitely more confident we're going down than staying up. Even though we're 3pts of 15th. Even though the pack from which 3 will be relegated are all struggling and only really Villa are properly adrift. Even despite all of this, nobody talks about how fucked the mackems are, how self-destructive Swansea look, how shockingly bad Norwich's defense look or how we're still suffering from a very difficult start to the league. fwiw, I did get worried, I think it was the last 2 games, when the situation looked desperate.
  5. Well maybe if you lot stopped being wrong, I'd stop biting.
  6. And despite action being taken, many are still desperate. By the by, nobody on here got carried away when we moved up to 17th. On here, it was simply a stay of the inevitable execution.
  7. The thing is, I'm not being contrary for contrariness' sake. I honestly am confident we'll survive and have been for ages. I truly do believe that the general disposition of the people on this board is to the side of negativity and pessimism. Put it this way, I think when we failed to beat Stoke, I saw signs for optimism because we created plenty of chances, but faced a top class 'keeper in fine form. It seemed like others on here saw another 2pts dropped and nowt else.
  8. No I disagree, what's being said is "we're worse than those sides and will remain so".
  9. Well yeah, of course if we get no more points we'll be relegated, but while that is factually accurate, it's hardly bloody likely, now is it? What's as likely, and some may even say more likely, is that we'll revert to the mean and get around 1/1.5 points per game and end up around 15th. Certainly given the strengthening of the squad. But honestly, that's not what happens on here, people see the current situation and expect it to remain the same. I genuinely believe that if Swansea hadn't won there'd be people entirely confident that we'd survive. Simply because we were 17th.
  10. I don't see it as more desperate. because we're not 3 games from the end of the season and needing 7points. There's easily enough time to get to safety, we're only 6 points off 12th ffs, so describing our situation as desperate is, frankly, histrionics.
  11. Maybe the difference you see between Swansea & Norwich's desperate situation and our own is bigger than I do? I see Swansea as being 1pt above us, selling key players to rivals and in terrible form and therefore in as much trouble as us. You see them as out of the relegation zone and therefore not in as much trouble
  12. Aren't they? " if they weren't struggling they wouldn't be around us. But Swansea have just won their last game to move above and just appointed a new manager so I wouldnt say they were throwing in the towel just yet. And Bournemouth have also strengthened and have been picking up results more regularly than us." If that doesn't say "Newcastle are fucked and those around us are getting out of it" I don't know what would.
  13. Fuck me, this place. I'm honestly confused as to why many of you get out of bed in the morning. "Other teams are struggling, but they'll get out of it and we won't."
  14. Cool Honestly, this place is exhausting.
  15. Phrase that I grew up with, I took it to mean "popping up with (petty) complaints". Generally used as a preemptive scolding "We're going here and I don't want you chipping off all the way". Thought it was common.
  16. Weren't you chipping off last year that we were definitely going down as well? How'd that turn out? The performances are improving, we've strengthened our squad, and look to be strengthening it further. We're now closer to 15th than 19th and the teams around us are struggling. One of them looks like they've thrown the towel in completely (Swansea). But aye, our situation is definitely getting even more desperate.
  17. Is it? I thought we were dragging ourselves out of the relegation zone and as such, the situation was getting less desperate?
  18. He will, there's no lack of confidence there and the quality of chances should improve. Shelvey's delivery from set pieces must surely be better than Colback et al.
  19. There's a lot of chatter on Twitter in favour of Townsend. A lot of it seems to be because he's English, as if that really means anything.
  20. For all there's 6 minutes of Townsend skipping past players in the highlight reel, there are areas we're weak in that should be prioritised. Left Back, Striker and Centre Half are all in need of strengthening.
