Peter Beardsley insists he will throw his hat into the ring and try and land the job of managing his former club ... Hartlepool United. The ex-Toon hero says it would be 'a fantastic job for whoever gets it'. He admitted he is interested in moving into football management after being second favourite to becoming Martin Scott's successor at Victoria Park. The 45-year-old is after his coaching badges, and he has also worked as a coach in the England set-up under Kevin Keegan. He ended his playing career at Hartlepool in 1999 after two spells at St James' Park. Beardsley: "I have a great affinity with Hartlepool United. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and it is a great club. The fans are very passionate and they have a great chairman in Ken Hodcroft. I had a great relationship with the chairman when I was there, he does things by the book and never goes back on any promises he makes. "The progress they have made in recent years is unbelievable and it is testament to the work of the chairman that they are now an established League One side. I still have an important job at Newcastle United in their academy that I enjoy very much. But I must admit that management is something that appeals to me and I am coming to the end of my coaching badges and I am not far off considering a move into management. "The Hartlepool job would be a fantastic job for whoever gets it. There has been a lot of names mentioned for it, I have heard mine's included, and the job (caretaker boss) Paul Stephenson has done must put him in the frame, although I believe he has ruled himself out of it."

The leaked dossier and betting syndicate stuff has simply been added to what Shepherd is alleged to have already said during the week. Considering this story has come from "The People" and the quote about not approaching or intending to approach are identical to the ones that McCarthy said during the week on sky i would think this is just a rehashed story. -
JEAN Alain Boumsong is determined not to let Newcastle's FA Cup run get in the way of the recent revival in the Premiership. The Magpies booked their place in the last eight thanks to a 1-0 win over Southampton at St. James' Park on Saturday, which came courtesy of Kieron Dyer's 68th minute strike. Newcastle will discover their quarter final opponents on Monday afternoon when the draw is made at the FA's headquarters in Soho Square, and while Boumsong is looking forward to learning who the Magpies will face, he insists the immediate concern is beating Charlton in Wednesday's rearranged game at Gallowgate. He told nufc.co.uk: "It was a good win for us at the weekend against Southampton. "It was tough, but we worked hard and we were delighted to get the goal and win the game. "I know all about how important the FA Cup is to this club, it is our only chance of winning something this season and after getting to the semi final last season, we must aim to reach the final and go on and win it now. "But before our next game in the cup - whoever it is against - we have to concentrate on winning our league games now. "We have three important matches coming up at home in the next week or so, starting with Charlton on Wednesday. "We have improved in the last three games, and we have taken six points from the last two league matches so we want to keep that going. "We will look forward to the cup game when it comes around, but now we must look at the league and concentrate on building on the wins we had against Portsmouth and Aston Villa." The French international added: "There has been a big improvement, the biggest thing is that we are winning matches now. "We are playing with confidence, we look strong and we are scoring goals. We are looking forward to the matches, because we know there is a long way to go this season. "We do not need to be told that the form in the league has not been good enough, but the season is not finished yet. "We are still in the cup, there are plenty of points to play for so we could still have a good finish."

Michael Owen will be asked to inherit the fabled Newcastle No 9 shirt when Alan Shearer hangs up his boots this summer. United's top brass see Owen as the perfect successor to English football's most iconic jersey, And the England striker, despite believing 10 is his lucky number, is unlikely to refuse. It will see Owen follow in the footsteps of a succession of legendary goalscorers - and offer the chance to cement his relationship with the fans. Injury, Sven-Goran Eriksson's indiscreet claim that Owen is unhappy on Tyneside, and hotly-denied talk that he has a get-out clause in his Newcastle contract, have clouded the striker's career at St James's Park. But success in the shirt of United legends would guarantee Owen greater public adoration than he has ever enjoyed elsewhere. Albert Shepherd, Hughie Gallacher, Albert Stubbins, Jackie Milburn, Len White, Malcolm Macdonald, Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand and Shearer himself have been among the Magpies' magnificent No 9s. And the Toon Army will hope that the challenge of matching their exploits will keep Owen at Newcastle in the long-term. However, Owen is likely to lose the captain's armband to Scott Parker next season despite their being plenty of dressing-room support for him to succeed Shearer as United skipper. Others - and Newcastle's hierarchy - regard midfielder Parker as the right man in the right position.
