Fordy 1 Posted February 6, 2007 Share Posted February 6, 2007 The damned american radio channel sounded a right mess the only professional one was costa which for any one who missed it was clearly british. seems like they got most of the armoured vechiels painted a certain colour (friendlies that is) would have thought with the amount of doubt the pilots had command would have called off the attack just incase on another note did the brits shoot any americans during the war? Well they've tried flying high making them vulernable to SAM's which are plentiful now in Iraq, then they tried fast and low...Thus making them targets for rifles and rpg's. Kids shoot at them apparently for a laugh. Better than sitting at home with the old playstation I guess. I always thought they were too well armoured to have trouble from machine gun fire. Apache's are pretty fragile, not even sure they have bulletproof canopies I can't see a reason why they would suddenly have just got better at firing at helicopters, it's not that easy. They could have got lucky a few times where the chopper was flying straight at / away from them. They may have learned to wait to the optimum range and fire as a group, I hear even insects have learning abilities. This has been happenning and apparently the reason for the downing of a stealth fighter iirc about 3 years ago. The were just shooting in pre-arranged squares at certain times of the night or summat when stealth missions were going on at a pretty high rate. I would have thought the Iraninan supplied anti- tank stuff would be equally as devasting to a helicopter at shortish range. But it must be also a case that the locals have thought through how to maximise damage to these helicopters and as you say some are quite fragile. @yourservice 67 Posted February 7, 2007 Share Posted February 7, 2007 A good friend of mine has done a tour in Iraq with the Territorials and he said the yanks were as much as a threat as the insurgents, on one occasion he was in a landrover (unarmoured he tells me) when they took friendly fire and had to make a very hastily drawn union jack on a piece of A4 and wave it out of a window to make them stop. So the US air force decides to send out two complete novices on a mission to take out ground units in a real war... Suppose they have to start somewhere but sounds wrong to me. I know the RAF pilots that helped bomb Baghdad (probably the only pilots who hit the target) had years of experience behind them comparatively. It is well know our pilots are much better than theirs on the whole. FFS! We have to fly some of their stealth missions cause they're too difficult for the rednecks.
