SUNDERLAND boss Roy Keane is plotting a daring raid on neighbours Newcastle to land midfielder Nicky Butt. Keane wants his former Manchester United team-mate to lead the Black Cats next season, hopefully in the Premiership.

The 32-year-old midfielder was surplus to requirements last summer at Newcastle, but no buyer came forward and he played his way into Glenn Roeder's plans.

However, the Toon will let him got this summer as Roeder looks to flood his squad with youth.

Butt played with Keane at Old Trafford and would jump at the chance to link up with his old pal.

I'd let him go if could get somewhere close to what we paid for him back, with him reported to be on massive wages and in the last year of his contract it would make sense to get what we can for him.

Made the same mistake with Speed. Keep him. Experienced, fit, and just what we need in the centre.

I don't think that's enough of a reason to keep him, he may or may not go on playing like Speed did but getting £2 million for a 32 year old who's on £40k plus pw would represent good business for the club.

One of our better players this season. We need to stop thinking in terms of players ages and money we can get for them and more about what is being produced on the pitch.

Is Nicky Butt expendible at this point in time? Not in my opinion.

Lets see who they bring in first rather than talk about letting go.

When your holding man is one of your better players then it says more about how poor we have been as a team rather than how good Nicky Butt has been, with money tight and positions need filling it makes sense to get rid of the older players in the squad with a short career ahead of them if we can get good money.

If we could get £2 million for Butt and replace him with Sidwell on a free then that would represent excellent business for the club on and off the pitch.

Would sooner keep Butt tbh, Sidwell's shite. :icon_lol:

Sidwell is not a holding player like Butt. How would one replace the other?

Parker would drop back into the holding position, not that we really need a holding player for more than a dozen games a season.

Shepherd was bigging Sidwell up in The Mirror today. Also claims Gerrard should be player of the season....

FREDDY SHEPHERD (Newcastle chairman)

WHO IS YOUR FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR?

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard remains the best midfielder in England. His commitment, energy and ability have again made Liverpool a major power on the Champions League stage.

WHO IS YOUR UNSUNG HERO?

Unfashionable Reading are the Premiership's surprise package. Steve Sidwell typifies their grit and determination.

WHO HAS PRODUCED THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON?

Several of Ronaldo's outstanding displays have caught the imagination, not least his virtuoso showing in Manchester United's 4-0 win against Spurs at White Hart Lane.

WHO IS THE BEST EMERGING YOUNGSTER?

Arsenal's Cesc Fabergas gets better with every game and it is hard to believe he's still only 19. And we've unearthed an outstanding young defender in Steven Taylor.

According to my sources, Tottenham had offers for all of the above knocked back in the January transfer window but the players will probably be signing in the summer, their clubs accepted the fees but just wanted to wait.

You missed the bit where Newcastle offered to double the wages Spurs had offered. :icon_lol:
