So who wants a link to a local b&b on their site?

:lol:

I'll add it later to N.O, we have a page rank 5 (I think) so that should set the ball rolling. I have to be careful myself mind as N.O's turning into a link farm of late :o I actually have to sort that site out, forum's page rank has went down to 3 due to it not pointing back to the main site when the header disappeared, and we seem to be the victims of a few scrapper sites, gets.

Top man.

I thought that was the whole point of meta-tags?

wiki:

"Unlike the meta keyword tag, the meta description tag is supported by most major search engines, including Google. The meta description tag provides a concise explanation of a web page's content. This allows the webpage author to give a more meaningful description for listings than might be displayed if the search engine was to automatically create its own description based on the page content."

The Meta Description Tag is very important, Keyword Tags aren't though which I think is what a few were referring to.

I cant recall which is which, but there is one kind of meta-tag that sites used to use as search engines used to look for them. This was done away with as porn sites etc would include these tags in their pages though the words(tags) had no relevance. Just popular words (disney etc). So now my understanding is that you have to have the relevant phrase as actual visible content (cant be hidden content) on the page. So for example, you might want the phrase "South Shields B&B" repeated a few times legitimately over the page.

I just meant keywords as in in the main content. To my mind meta-tags are for adding data about the site that isn't visible in the content.

Oh, well in that case body keywords are very important, it is your content after all. A lot of people go ackers with the SEO thing though and their copy reads like a lits of keywords. Again, quality content is all that really matters.

"Blue widgets welcomes you to blue widgets world, the number one place to buy blue widgets. Blue widgets have been operating online since 1997 and are a leader in blue widgets, supplying not only the public sector with blue widgets but also the private sector. Indeed we are regarded as blue widget kings."

Bad.

As is massive titles stuffed full of keywords, and nonsensical description tags also stuffed with keywords.

Target your top 10 keywords carefuly, and try to cut to the chase without keyword stuffing as exampled above.

Welcome to blue widgets world - bad

Blue widgets world online - good

And so on and so on.

Another tip, hyphenate your pages, underscore is out apparently.

So:

Newcastleunited.htm - bad

newcastle_united.htm - good

newcastle-united.htm - even better

Although to be fair, I think the results between underscore and hyphenate are marginal so...

Added the link HF,

Get you aunt to replace this with the following:

Replace:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/template.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<head><title>Kingsmere Guest House - Guest House South Shields, Accommodation Tyne & Wear, UK</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<link href="css/default.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style type="text/css">
<!--

-->

With

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/template.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<head><title>Kingsmere Guest House Accommodation South Shields, Tyne & Wear UK</title>
<meta name="description" content="Kingsmere Guest House Accomodation South Shields, Tyne & Wear UK">
<meta name="revisit-after" content="1 Day">
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<link href="css/default.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style type="text/css">
<!--

-->

Instead of this in your body text:

Welcome to Kingsmere Guest House

Replace it with this:

Kingsmere Guest House Accommodation South Shields, Tyne & Wear UK

Also put the above somewhere in the header and make it header 3 tag.

In other parts of your body you need the words Kingsmere Guest House Accommodation South Shields repeated a few more times, one as a link, one as bold, one as italic, one as header 2, one as colored text.

Then think about what other keywords maybe important, and make them add-on keywords throughout the site really.

Find some blogs that are related to your site and where there are posts and a comment feature, add your comment, and where it asks you to put your URI, put the link in. Do this with 4 other blogs (UK ones),

When Google crawls N.O it will notice a new link, and follow it, recrawling it. With the tweaking and a few more inbound links, your rankings should improve by maybe a full page or more within a few weeks, depending.

Anyone wants their site SEO'd, my rates are cheap :lol:

Something which hasnt been mentioned yet is the structure of your site, it needs to be well structured using CSS and XHTML. Make sure its got good accesibility and the likes of images are correctly tagged with titles and alt tags.

How do you get a higher position on google? Is it only based on hits?

My auntie has a website for her B&B, but when you google "South Shields B&B" she's pages away from the top.

Stick her web address on here/N-O and ask for people to visit it. Can't do any harm. Sorry I can't answer the question.

It's not a great site, she just knows people will go to the first link and ring them 95% of the time so basic is good enough.

But if anyone needs a place in Shields....

http://www.thekingsmereguesthouse.com/

I feel dirty selling out like this. Bill Hicks wouldn't piss on me if I was ablaze.

I had a look for you :lol:

When I search for 'B&B's' thats what I type in not 'Guest houses' perhaps thats why it doesnt come up on the first page. Like someone said needs a mention of B&B on the actual site. And links from other sites. Cant she contact tourist information etc to see if she can be included on their information sites?

My son knows alot about improving your google position, he's done it on all his sites, I'll have to ask him for some tips for you when he gets home.

Posting links to the competition's websites isn't going to help HF's cause. :lol:

Oh Bollocks to you !!

I was only wandering if HF's auntie's site came up if you typed in guest houses :o

For a big keyword, 5th on the first page. Site only a few weeks old.

Green Street film review

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&s...eview&meta=

Give me a year and I'll be on the first page of Google, in the top 5 for most of my targeted keywords, 1st for a few, and 1,2,3 for another couple. Dead easy if you know how ;)

Getting traffic to any site is easy, despite what they tell you, now getting people to buy from you, that's hard, very hard.

:aye:

You don't want to fall into the trap of targeting just Google users, there is MSN, Yahoo (Directory), All Of The Web and other Search Engines that can provide just as much or more traffic than Google can. Ideally you want to do well in them all.

Anyway, what you need more than anything...

Links off quality and relevant sites, sites with a Pange Rank of 3 and above ideally, your aunt's site has a page rank of zero BTW, that needs to rise. Google uses PR to determine all kinds of things about your site, its popularity mainly, more links linking to your site means its a popular site people feel they need to link to, equals a higher page rank for you. The idea however is to keep the number of links you give away to none or just a few.

Some content, you have none. Basically there is nowt to crawl and more importantly, nowt to recrawl again and again. Google likes fresh content.

You need to optimise keywords and phrases on the site and you also need to research others sites like yours and what Google returns for those search words etc.

Cut out lots of none relevent words, keep the copy as tight as possible.

You need a Dmoz listing (very important)

And you also need to give it a while, as sometimes it can take months to get indexed properly.

BTW Gemmill, Obagol is right, those search engine submission services are a waste of money (a con in fact), aimed at newbies really and something used by hosts and domain name companies to lure people into buying domans through them and hosting packages, I'm surprised you had to pay for them as they usually do this for free and even then, there are literally hundreds if not more free online tools to submit sites to the engines.

Biggest factor regarding search engines is trial and error, depends what you want though. If you want to tweak everything to dominate it is an ongoing job, just want to rank well enough, the things outlined above should do the trick, depending on how competitive the keywords are.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I assume this is google webmaster, basically the easiest way is to just save a blank page, nothing at all in the code just save it as "googlec7c8fe4eb4fc7689.html" then load it upto the server and viola!
