Newcastle’s £6m offer for Smith holds the key to Dyer departure

Like Alex, I think Smith would be a handy addition to the squad. I don't think he'll play every game or anything but he'll do a job when he does, and more importantly it's about time we had subs of that sort of quality sat on the bench.

And there in lies the difference. A fully fit Dyer will be in the first team, the same can't be said for Smith IMO, I just think we're getting a lesser player for the same money.

I don't think a fully fit Dyer would neccessarily make the first team actually. More like Milner - Barton - Butt - N'Zogbia imo.

Dependent on form obviously I'd possibly have him in there in front of Milner and Butt (provided we're up against weaker opposition) and it remains to be seen how Barton will settle.

It's not really his leaving that bothers me, I think things have just come to their natural conclusion, but the fact that we've worked so long to get him fit and are now looking at a fee of around £5.5m which seems to be equivalent to an Alan Smith or a Kieron Richardson. I'd let him go for £8m+ but anything else and I think we're undervaluing him in light of the money which has been spent by other clubs this summer.

Maybe the money is there and Allardyce can't attract any players. It was there for this left-back.

You on about the fella we were looking for £1m from PSG? It's hardly huge money now.

I have absolutely no idea what you are on about. Were you trying to be sarcastic with your post about attracting players and money?

Of course it was sarcastic, it is like you :nufc:

I meant it's another player he's supposedly gone in for and has chosen another club. Same could be said about Gudjohnssen (sp?) same applied to applied to Shorey, same applied to Heinze, same applied to Ben Haim, etc. There are other factors why other player with other clubs in competition for their signatures haven't signed for us - i.e. we aren't in Europe etc. but I can't understand why everyone is assuming the board is withholding funds - it doesn't make sense that they should do that. Perhaps Allardyce can't attract the players is all I'm saying. I hope not, obviously but he couldn't get the PSG kid to sign (allowing for press bullshit, obviously).

Seems even less plausible that Allerdyce can't attract players considering who he got at Bolton, plus his rather public laments in the press. I assumed Ashley would know in this game you've got to speculate to accumulate, but maybe he just has the mentality of a cut price shop keeper after all.

Dyer is better than that lot. Smith isnt as good and it isnt all about the 'team' rather than the permutations open to you. Smith is fine but on a like for like basis we are getting a far weaker player.

How about the fact that Allardyce has already alluded to the fact that we'll not be spending big money during this transfer window and the fact that most of the players we seem to have been linked to are fairly cheap options? It seems to me that we've lost out to other clubs because they've been more willing to meet the selling clubs valuations whereas we seem to be taking too long in being able to complete deals.

All this talk of a strategic review also leads me to believe that the club wants to get our house in order before we embark on any substantial spending which will have a direct impact on the sort of player we will be looking to sign and therefore on the team performance. Allardyce has also said that Mort and Ashley aren't football men which suggests he is frustrated with the level of help he is getting during this transfer window. I'm worried that Mort is looking at the club purely as a business without realising that we can't afford to be sitting around on our hands while the clock is ticking down and our targets are joining other clubs. With the start of the season only a couple of weeks away what club is going to want to sell any of their decent players without the time to buy suitable replacements? It's getting to a similar situation as last year where we're obviously short of numbers and clubs know that we're desperate to get players in.

I wouldnt have thought Gudjohnssen would cost much more than £6m and he's a better player IMO. Dyer has caused the fans to get on his back by engineering a move away from the club once his injuries look to be finally behind him. We've supported him for years paying god knows what to get the right treatment for him. Now that looks sorted, he's away back down south. Still dont condone the behaviour of those mindless individuals who think that "Support" means to go and attack his private life. Should be hunted down and locked up.

Well, allegedly, there was a £7m bid in for a defender, but the player(Riise) turned us down.

So maybe Fatso is aiming too high, considering we have no Euopean football to offer.

I was just putting the possibility out there. Allardyce may be getting his excuses in early too. Allardyce's comments would equally tie in with that, would they not?

In that case, Allardyce should be the perfect man to get players in. Unless we are a less attractive prospect than Bolton or have a smaller fund than he had to operate with there, which I can't believe. In any case it's a little early to judge things, don't you think? I can't believe how fickle some people are.

I don't buy that not being in the UEFA cup makes a difference either. The Champion's league, maybe though.

Which would account for at least three of our supposed targets admittedly.

Allardyce may be getting his excuses in early too. Allardyce's comments would equally tie in with that, would they not?

His excuses for not being able to attract top players? Even at Bolton Allardyce never seemed to have a problem attracting decent names, even when we had no European football in 05/06 we were still able to attract Owen, Parker, Luque and Emre and seeing as West Ham and Man City have been able to sign a few decent players without European football this season I doubt attracting players is our problem, the only obvious reason I can think of is that we aren't able to offer the transfer fees that the selling clubs want.

So we've got a smaller transfer pot than Allardyce had at Bolton? Don't buy it, sorry.

The other possibility is that we haven't even been interested in some of the players we're getting linked with. Allardyce has admitted to missing out on some targets, but this left back yesterday - one minute we're linked, the next he's signed for someone else. Did we actually have any sort of firm interest in the bloke?

Well we certainly don't appear to have a big one, I just think no significant funds will be released until the completion of this strategic review which makes absolutely no sense in the footballing world.

The way that went about would leave me to believe that we were never linked with him. No freaking way does a transfer go through that quick.

I'd say we're not interested in at least 50% of the players we've been linked with, especially given that the leaks at SJP have stopped. But Allardyce isn't stupid and has spoken repeatedly about wanting to get players in and missing out on targets, I just fail to believe that we're missing out on all of them because we're an unattractive prospect.

Give it time man, we're already far more active than we were this time last year.
