Vitamins

Whacking up your vitamin C intake doesn't do much to prevent getting colds but it's good for getting rid of them IIRC.

Has it conclusively even been shown to do that? Especially in supplemental form?

I can't be bothered to dig out the paper but I think so. Colds take care of themselves anyway mind so it's not going to make a world of difference.

All I've seen has been very mixed, with it perhaps reducing severity or length in some people (although that might be dietary issues etc.). Not seen anything very recent on it though.

At the end of the day though we're a society that prescribes antibiotics for colds so it just shows how much we like a good placebo.

tomatoes in almost every meal when I was in my second and third years. Big bag of frozen veg... not as good for you as fresh veg obviously, but they're easier to store and just as easy to prepare. There's bound to be an international supermarket near your gaff, so tootle down and pick up some new and exciting veg on the cheap.

I remember being told Chili peppers speed up your metabolism, and so they're a good way to stay slim, just pop one (sliced) in your sandwiches or bolognese or whatever.

Easiest way to stay slim is to stay off takeaways late at night, because you're basically buying them for tradition or to satisfy any imagined cravings you've concocted. If you have to eat, some toast is just as satisfying as a kebab.

Swearing off takeaway was the best dietary choice I've ever made to be honest. Pretty obvious, but bugger me you feel so much better without all that shite in your system.

  • 17 years later...

So has modern science and knowledge progressed in the last 18 years regarding vitamins.

I’ve never taken any as (touch wood), I’ve had a fairly healthy life. However I now see them getting mentioned all over and the Doc told my daughter the other day, “everybody in the UK should be on Vitamin D”.

Is cod liver oil still  a thing as well.

Only time I've been to America and put the TV on for five minutes I was struck by the amount of adverts for medical stuff like vitamins etc, I saw more TV adverts for stuff like this in one day than I'd seen in a few years here, I suppose you could flip that and a foreigner came here they would not believe the amount of gambling adverts especially during a game although I've noticed it creeping into the Italian TV for games as well although at least they've got the good grace to have one of their stunning presenters included in the advert and I've no idea if they use a shit nickname for 'accumulator' in Italian?

There's definitely an argument for everyone in the UK and further north than us to be on vitamin D cos we don't get enough sunlight, particularly at this time of year. I take vitamin D for that reason. I think I'm on 3 or 4000 IU per day.

Whether you could get the same from food or not, I don't know.

I take a high dosage of Vitamin D as I'm calcium deficient. It manifests as extreme joint pain, especially the knees so I also take this stuff.

My missus needs something like that if she's not taking something already, she hardly gets out. (I sometimes lose track of the things she has to take).

I've said it before but I think the human being is seasonal and we're genetically designed to part hibernate in the winter months. We're going against nature to expect us to operate the same in winter as we do in Summer. Days are shorter, so too should the working day.

Well I'm well up for that, if you could please just explain it to my boss.

If someone can persuade mine I'm happy to.
