Breaking news on SSN.

OK I definitely think something is afoot. If Ashley was solely concerned with filling his pockets, he'd have accepted that without question.

I am just cynical or is Ashley just waiting for a larger bid from Man City ?

Big risk to take if that was the case what with the amount of debt we are in. Also hes only had 1 year and whilst I think 10 million for us is craxy money I would expect them to go for a more experienced player...

Why would we refuse £10M for Bassong and hold our for £4m for Beye? Odd, if indeed true. Martins sale I can understand, £9M for him is very good business.

Sky Sports News understands Newcastle United have rejected a £10million bid from Tottenham Hotspur for Sebastien Bassong.

The French defender has attracted a wealth of interest over the summer following Newcastle's relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season.

Bassong has admitted that he would be keen to leave St James' Park in order to stay in the top flight and has claimed there has been interest from Arsenal.

Everton and Manchester City are also reportedly keeping tabs on the 23-year-old, while Spurs have now moved in with a firm bid.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is keen to bring in a new centre-half before the start of the season with injury doubts surrounding Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson and Ledley King.

The club's chief scout watched Bassong in action in Newcastle's friendly at home to Leeds United in midweek and Spurs have subsequently made an offer.

Newcastle have rejected the initial bid and are in no rush to sell Bassong due to the number of clubs chasing the former Metz stopper.

Bassong made 34 appearances for the Magpies last season after his arrival on Tyneside and was one of the better performers as the club lost their Premier League status.

Bassong is allegedly Man City's 4th choice behind Lescott, Alex and someone else I can't remember.

Ashley is playing a dangerous game if he is. What's more, I don't think he'll get much more than £10m for Bassong. I know straws are being clutched but I'm wondering if there are players he's been told not to sell as conditions of the sale.

I was playing Devils advocate, but I wouldn't put it past Ashley, although this is the same regime that let Given leave for a fraction of his true value.

Something is afoot methinks.

It is clutching at straws a bit but £10m is excellent money for him under the circumstances (as much as I like Bassong) so you'd expect a bid like that to be accepted. He's still a young, fairly unproven kid (albeit with loads of potential). Maybe Ashley is just after a tad more or wants the money upfront (for a change :jesuswept: ) though.

There has got to be something more in this, I don't think Bassong is worth £10million, He has had one season in the premiership and still fairly unproven. You would of thought anything more than £7million Mike would of taken in a snap.

I've just got zero optimism. I assume anything to do with any sale is total bullshit until it's confirmed. The rumours around the asking price aren't too good either. Funnily enough I believe those rumours.

Something is definitely afoot.........didn't believe it until now. £10Mil is amazing money for Bassong; but he's not a high earner and is exactly the type of player any prospective buyer would want to keep.

seems odd rejecting the bid like, no lescott for everton today after he picked up a "knock". That would suggest hes going to city... So for newcastle to reject the bid seems really odd. Arsenal would'nt offer more than 10m i dont think.

But then again hughton sais he would play his team that would start against west brom today so if theres no bassong that means he is leaving just a matter of more money.
