this firm has a few cars decribed as being 'trade only sale' - which they said meant sold as seen.

when i asked for test drive the gadgie said no and i said i could pay in cash there and then but the guy still refused.

its supposedly has a full mot and when asked how it drove the bloke said 'fine'.

Would anyone buy a car that they couldnt test drive?

No. I'd definitely smell a rat.

What have they got to hide? I can only presume they don't want you to have the rights you'd have if you bought it as a normal dealership sale: ie that it has to be road-worthy, fully working and if anything major goes wrong just after you buy it it's up to them to put it right.

4x4 specialists aren't they?

Have you got any mates who are mechanics? You could get them to look at it if the garage are ok with that. You'll not get a warranty so you better be sure. If the price seem too good to be true it probably is too good to be true.

nope. i do have a relative who ran the reg vardy garage at shiremoor and im waiting for him to ring as we speak.

If they have any interest in doing business with you and there's nothing dodgy going on with the car in question, they'd be only too happy to let you test drive it.

Their loss but they definitely wouldn't be getting my custom on that basis - christ only knows what their response would be if you bought it and then it went wrong...

I can tell you exactly what it would be: Tough shit, sold as seen.

Whilst chasing you off their premises armed with a torque wrench?

the saleman gadgie said if i bought the car and it broke down 50 yards outside the gates then its nowt to do with them.

The impression i got from being on the premises and talking to the gadgie wasnt that of a bunch of bandits tbh.

It's your shout at the end of the day Laz. You could get a gem or you could get a wallet emptying nightmare.

Have you asked them why they're selling it trade? Surely there's more profit in cleaning it up and sticking it on the forecourt if its decent. And sending it to the auctions if its an unwanted part-ex.

Sorry like Laz but the two don't go together. As with any purchase you have the right to take it back if a fault develops within a reasonable period - I think with second hand cars if you buy it from trade they are obliged provide a 3 month guarantee (essentially if anything goes wrong, they'll look at fixing it at no added cost to yourself).

I bought a second hand car that spat a valve after a month. Took it back to where I got it from and they fixed it up for me

Not to sound like a retard, but did you ask why you couldn't drive it? I mean, if it's some horseshit where their lot insurance has lapsed or something, that's one thing, but I'd have to agree with everyone else on the fucking planet and suggest you not buy a car you can't test drive first.

of course i asked - he said it was sold as seen.

which under the sale of goods act is utter bollocks.

thinking of going back up with a mechanis and seeing if theyll let him have a look at it.

If you can't drive it then don't buy it! Clearly if anything does go wrong then it'll be a nightmare trying to get them to fix it.

tbh Laz I'd simply look elsewhere - why waste your time on people who clearly are a bunch of bandits?
