Mike Ashley 'already taking steps for Newcastle to prosper in Premier League'

The sports retail tycoon has abandoned plans to sell the club and is instead busy devising a plan to enable the St James' Park club prospers should the Championship leaders win this season's promotion race.

 

“Mike is already looking at next season and what can be done if promotion is achieved,” a source close to Ashley said.

 

“All the cuts made over the past year have put the club on a very sound financial footing. Most Premier League sides would love to be in a similar position.

 

“Without Mike's input, the club would be broke. Simple as that. He knows mistakes have been made but really wants to see the club back where they belong.

 

“It's not him being over-confident. Chris Hughton has done a fantastic job but plans need to be made for what could be an exciting time next season for everyone.”

 

Newcastle will head to Barnsley on Saturday with a commanding seven-point lead over nearest rivals Cardiff with third-placed Cardiff, who head the chasing pack in the play-off positions, a further five points back.

 

While Ashley thinks long-term, Hughton is mindful of the need to avoid complacency as his team search for an eighth consecutive win.

 

“With that 12-point lead comes the pressure of being there but it is something we have experienced all season,” Hughton said.

 

“We have a demanding support and rightly so with the numbers that turn up week in week out and we are expecting an incredible support at Barnsley.

 

“But there is also an expectation we have had all season from our support. It is something we have had to live with. Of course we do have a good lead at this moment and at any stage of the season, of course, you would rather have it. It is something we have to cope with and we have to keep these players' feet on the ground."

 

... uh huh, because we'll be fine in the Prem just by signing a handful of free players, ffs :lol:

taking out the fact that there are zero Premiership clubs wishing they were top of the Championship, lets just look at this statement compared to those made a few weeks back, Anal Oliver suddenly kissed Ashleys arse with ""It is costing him £3m a month out of his own pocket to run Newcastle and he is trying to look at other ways of raising revenue - the St James' Park name is one of his few valuable assets." now Im sure most Premiership clubs dont look at us making a loss of £3m per month and think "fucking lucky, lucky bastards".

Not wishing to suck upto Shepherd but this is a bollocks statement, nowhere do they ever credit Shepherd/Hall with enough sense to cut our cloth accordingly, without Ashley we would have been in the Premiership, of that I have no doubt.

The people of Cardiff must be questioning the merit of having multiple teams in the Championship. Surely they'd be better off combining their second and third placed teams and quite possibly taking out the competition. I suppose that would also depend on the form of fourth placed Cardiff, and Cardiff in fifth who are breathing down their necks.

I guess it would be hard to not be pessimistic having been involved right through the shermozzle of last season. As much as it might seem to some that we're flying high at the moment, compared to where we were just two seasons ago (let alone six or seven when we were in the Champions League) we're in a dismal situation.

If Ashley hasn't paid for his services he would be well advised to give it a go. As much as I want rid of Ashley, I'd actually prefer him to run the club well, take a low profile and let the antipathy towards him mellow as he brings success. I'm sure this is how 95% of supporters feel too.

 

However, there has still been no indication whatsoever that this is likely to happen. The club continue to release stories (either directly or indirectly) that attempt to heap praise on Ashley as the man that has saved Newcastle. The cool head whose motives we fans cannot possibly comprehend...but will learn to once the glory days return.

 

It's all well and good apologising for getting us relegated, but it lacks any sincerity when you go on to claim that it's been the best thing that could have happened and most Premier League clubs would love to be in the same position.

 

I disagree with Clifford that promotion will win Ashley the support of even half the fans. The people on the stands want to see contrition. Not in words, but in deeds. He needs to do the equivalent of Jordan Price's 7 bush tucker trials in a row, and take his punishment in good humor to win any sort of backing. This means stopping the charm offensive, no more rhetoric about plans, no more excuses for the failures, backing down on the stadium renaming, taking down the sportsdirect.com sign every fan hates, hiring a chief executive with some experience in football, investing heavily in the first team squad without shouting about it from the rooftops and perhaps writing off some of the debt the club has to him, which he claims he would have lost had he sold the club in the summer anyway.

the thing is, we can go up this year but the fact is hes promoted our coach to manager, no real investment, we've dumped several players, signed a couple of frees and loans, no investment there either

 

he put nothing into us to get us back up its just happening in spite of him so far so if he tries to take credit when it happens it will, once again, just be ashley being full of shit
