Alex Ferguson would've played against (and been marked by, pardon the pun) McNamee, wouldn't he?

McNamee came from Celtic I think.

He started at Celtic and went to Hibs where we got him from in 1966.....Ferguson was playing for St Johnstone and Dunfermline around then so he very likely did play against each other....whether either were scared of each other I think it would be difficult to say....

Alex Ferguson, in his book, says that McNamee was built like a man-mountain and after one scuffle/disagreement they had, he sneaked out of the ground because he thought McNamee was waiting for him.

This is when he played for Rangers, or Dunfermline as PaddockLad says, I think McNamee was playing for Hibs at that time.

Anyway, this is the book, which is very good, one of the best.

Good read that Leazes....and I read the fergie book yonks ago, but can't remember much about it, maybe time for a another look at it.

The best book I've read about football, actually one of the best books I've ever read is this:

Gary Imlach used to do the American Football on Ch4. It's like a tribute to his old man, who played for Forest when they won the cup in 59 and for Scotland at the world cup in 58. Think it won the "best sports book award" a few years back.

Seeing in him another shirt was closure for me. Like, when you see a ex-lass with a new bloke.

Move on.

Hard to get closure if your ex lass left you for a richer bloke. Hurts even more when your ex lass was pretty good in bed too. But yeah i get your point. Time to move on.

ta, I will get that.

This is the best I have read,

but is closely followed by this. I was infatuated by Clough and Taylor when I was a kid, I watched them from when they were at Hartlepool it was obvious they were special right from the word go. Taylor had a great ability to spot players, he doesn't give away his secrets, he applied certain attributes but he looked at body language too, he had an instinct and a gift. If you shop around you will find it for a lot cheaper than this link btw.

it was me who told him about it and gave him the link. There are copies available. I had it in paperback originally but got a hardback copy a few years ago for about 3 quid or something. I've just looked for the Gary Imlach and there are loads on ebay.

The "With Clough" book is extensively quoted in "Why England Lose" http://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-England-Lose-p...d/dp/0007301111 when they discuss transfers. Taylor identified the talent mostly and Clough made the call as to when their time is up etc...Kenny Burns was an overweight drunk gambler at Birmingham City. C & T turned him into a European Cup winner and footballer of the year in 78 or 79, about 6 months before they sold him to Leeds for a huge profit and he didnt acheive anything in his career after that. The book compares C & T at Forest very favourably with the regime at Lyon in France, who until recently had been among the best teams in Europe for the best part of a decade.

The Why England Lose book is a great read, really enjoyed that especially as I'm quite into statistics and that sort.

Also, for anyone interested in baseball or just sport philosophy in general, read Moneyball. Its about the Oakland Athletics in the early 2000s and Billy Beane's method of finding talent on the cheap -- very fascinating.
