  3. Barnes liked a lie in. He’d spent years perfecting the art. Sometimes you just had to make about a hundred other people have nothing to do all morning so that you could sober up and have 4 Wetherspoons breakfasts and a cheeky Nando’s before getting the cones out. But the cones always came out, that’s what counts.

  5. Personally think this is a swing and a miss from Douglas. It’s putting too much weight on the high finish we got and leaves out a crucial point of why Pardew wasn’t accepted, and why I personally won’t look back on Pardew’s time “very fondly”, which was the manner of his appointment. It was a gut punch to the fans, a popular manager was removed for no fucking reason and replaced by a man who had no right to get a PL job. It felt like Ashley yet again being spiteful towards the fans as there was a good atmosphere and feeling from the fans towards Hughton and that squad. I look back on that 5th place season and really enjoyed it at the time, but I don’t really look back fondly at it. Not because I’m deluded and was expecting more, but because it was pretty much peak Ashley - from the manner of Pardews appointment, to the complete disregard and lack of desire to build on that 5th place finish which led to immediate decline in the squad and atmosphere. A lot of those players also left the club in ways that left my feelings towards them a little sour, I understand why some of them did it from their view and I don’t think they owe us anything but it still soured my opinion of them. For example seeing Ba suddenly being our cheerleader and trying to get to events/matches etc.

  8. He’s spoken fondly about us and with some sincerity I think. But I think he had a very good set of players and found a system that worked and that Cisse’s incredible purple patch provided the icing on the cake / led to the strong finish. There was a bit of a perfect storm of other teams / usual CL contenders not having a great season too. He was far too much of a lickspittle to the owner to be remembered that fondly and the rest of his tenure (and career) suggests he’s a fairly shite manager. In particular he seemed bereft of ideas when things weren't going well and got stuck in a rut of long runs without a win. On more than one occasion Ashley was forced to bail him out in January as new signings seemed to be the only way he could freshen things up during those poor runs. He’s also one of those managers with no discernible style / philosophy. He relied on coaches to do his coaching and couldn’t get to London quick enough / long enough when he had the chance when he was working here. Tl/dr: file under ‘fraud who was winging it’.

  9. I don't think he should win Manager of the Year, but if we were to rank the PL manager's performances, he must be top 5, right? Klopp and Guardiola are both in with a shout of a season of multiple trophies. But they've had years and millions to make it happen. Moyes has turned West Ham from a bit of a joke into a serious top half team, who could win a European title. But he built upon the work he did last season. Vieira and Frank have quietly done very well at Palace and Brentford respectively. But both are bottom half and could be overtaken by Eddie Howe's beautiful black and white bastards. Howe has worked wonders with a team that was among the favourites for the drop, no win in 12, disjointed, disorganised, unfit, unmotivated collection of individuals. They're now a squad that's within a shout of top half, is well-drilled, fit, driven and enjoying themselves. 1.45PpG, 40% Win percentage. Get that over 38 games and in an average PL season it'd get you 8th.

  10. Listening to old tabloid hacks proudly talking about the shit house tactics they used to employ as well btw. Not even the suggestion that they look back and think what they did was wrong. Proper scumbags.

  11. Well that's total bollocks on so many fronts. This "first safe country" is total bollocks not in the convention. We are supposed to be working to take a fair share based on quota of refugees, not immigrants, not economic or social migrants, but refugees. The tories very cleverly started calling refugees - migrants, years ago and its stuck . I personally think, if the country feels this way and we are going to act this way - then we need to be honest about it and leave the Geneva Convention for Refugees and own the shame that comes with that. Being a member , and sending a message to the world that we are here to help genuine refugees, then not giving them any legal entry point other than "sling them back" (aussie term) - is just some kind of evil imo. Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees - Wikipedia Germany shames us AGAIN.. There's some surprising info in the countries that genuinelly do take "more than their fair share" and we arent one of them. We do it all the time too, get involved in wars, or arm the aggressor (modern equivalent is Yemen, but Afghanistan 5 years ago is the same) - then it takes refugees months to travel here and we turn them away after leafletting them to leave and that we will help. A large number of these refugees are a result of our economic, military policy, its a harsh truth , but it is a truth. UNHCR - Refugee Statistics

  14. I couldn't care less if there are ex-players and managers out there who're now trying to find some coat tail to grab on to. Let 'em, I don't care. I'm sure Man City, Liverpool and the rest have all seen players wheeled out whose link to, or time with the club was janky at best. I'm more bothered about the rewriting of Pardew's history. It wasn't inexplicable, our dislike of him. Us being 9th on his final game was irrelevant. It was the awful football, the smarmy attitude, the excuses and criticisms and, yes, cosying up to Ashley. He praises the fans with one breath then shows a total misunderstanding of us in the next. I'm sure Bruce will, at some point in the future, turn up in the Sky Sports studios as a pundit for our game against Man Utd. "Ah well, y'know, great fans, nothing but positive to me on the streets, wish them well, but that should have been a penalty to United and Giggseh will need them to dust themselves down and roll up their sleeves"

  15. They're all going to be trying to reclassify themselves as former club legends now that we look like we might be anything but mediocre. Cisse was at it recently too.

  17. If Klopp wins the quadruple, it’s hard to look past him but I’m not sure the likes of Vieira or Frank could have done what Howe has done from the position we were in. I would throw in his transfer business as being the best all season too tbh. I don’t see many others you could make the argument for really. Conte has got a ramshackle Spurs looking lethal but he had plenty to work with

  19. This is something you'd expect the evil villain to come up with in a shit movie. Fleeing persecution and seeking refuge? We'll send you to a third world country guilty of multiple human rights violations thousands of miles away before saying no. And the real kicker is that it's going to cost £1.4 BILLION a year to run.

  21. End of last season was the first time since the bairn was born that I could afford to drop £600 on a season ticket. My dad had just retired and I asked him if he wanted to get a season ticket together. He said no as he would be away at the caravan every other weekend and it wasn't worth the money to watch Bruce ball. He got a season ticket for Durham CCC instead I remind him weekly that he's a twat

  25. I think I’m struggling. My dads death has hit me harder than I thought, and at random times. Im having a hard time dealing with the fact I might need to move back to boro to look after my seriously disabled brother, I moved away from that shit hole for a reason. I don’t want to put him in a home when my mam dies, but I don’t want to move back either. I have built a life here and it’s probably selfish but I don’t want to leave it to care for someone who with all the will in the world might not even recognise me. How is someone meant to weigh these decisions up man?

  26. Aye. Can’t watch anything about the bloke, in any other industry would be treated a damaged genius. Music has loads. So does film. The fact he was in football meant he was in a regular remit for scum reporters which didn’t help with what was obvious mental health problems. He could have been so much more but he did incredibly well to be what he was imo.

  32. How long until the next GE? It feels like we've had an eternity under Johnson now and while I did at one point believe he'd bottom out on lunacy and "populist" trash, I now suspect that what I think the basement level floor of human decency is, is already something he's looking upwards at.

  33. Apparently Israel have been sending people attempting to enter by some means or other to Rawanda so it seems a like a nice little cottage industry for them. Australia tried this with Nauru etc and in a decade processed 3000 individuals which cost the Aussie tax payer 400 million dollars. Johnson said the funding is uncapped, which suggests to me today is the first day of the campaign for the 2024 GE, despite the nationalities and borders act yet to have been approved by both houses of Parliament....

  34. This speech by Johnson is frankly worrying. Attacking lawyers, he says he knows its illegal, and says we need to reform the law to get this through. I don't think its hyperbolic to say we are in danger of losing our country as we know it. Attacks on Parliament, the media, and the judiciary. It really is like watching years and years, that series was so prophetic.

  37. True enough. I'm trying not to get too ahead of myself when it comes to predicting where we'll end up. Sure we've got a decent manager, some good players and a decent opportunity to spunk some wonga. BUT we're criminally short up front, have little depth outside the first 11, and a bottom half defence on the whole. We're not going to address all those weaknesses in the next window or two. So, I reckon, a reasonable bet would be safely nestled in the beige bosom of midtable early enough to pop on some flip flops and enjoy pressing them down on the throat of whichever team gets promoted until the struggling stops. I think Frank might survive a few games into next season, but if he continues to have a PpG of under 1, he'll be binned off sharpish. They cannot afford another season of struggling against relegation. What I come back to is this; Everton are a bigger threat to us than Fulham, Bournemouth or whoever comes up through the play offs. So if they go down, and Burnley stay up, that's better than the other way around.
